Nothing says summer quite like a day spent sunbathing and splashing on the beach. And if your definition of a perfect beach includes powdery white sand, calm water, family-friendly amenities, and abundant wildlife, then it's time to start planning a trip to Florida's St. George Island State Park. The 1,962-acre park, part of St. George barrier island off the coast of the Sunshine State, was just named the best in the U.S. by coastal expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, aka Dr. Beach, in his yearly ranking of America's best beaches.

"St. George State Park boasts some of the finest, whitest sand in the world," Leatherman told Travel + Leisure. "The park has nine miles of unobstructed, pristine beach with crystal clear and clean turquoise water."

Part of the so-called "Forgotten Coast" of Florida that comprises beautiful and relatively under-the-radar coastal destinations southwest of Tallahassee, St. George Island feels like a different world with about 1,000 permanent residents and no large real estate or commercial developments.

Ill take Siesta Key. Been there 15 times since I was a kid. Side note: Key West beach sucks.

Not the best beach, or even the best beach in our county, but Ribera beach is just south of Carmel, and theres hardly anyone ever there. It’s forgotten by locals and unknown to tourists. Whenever we have company from out of town and they want to go to the beach, I take them here.

Most of the people who own homes in this neighborhood live somewhere else, so even the residents here are hardly ever at the beach. I have two clients who live in Palo Alto, but have homes right here. They spend about 4 days a month here.

I do hope you are enjoying your beach trip,, Destin has gotten so crowded over the last 10 years or so.. If you want some good seafood, try Harbor Docks, I highly recommend, they serve fresh gulf seafood, and believe it or not, thats not always the case in the panhandle..
Heres a tip to help beat the crowds, eat at your favorite restaurants at lunch, if they are open, then you come back to your condo and you have all day for beach or whatever, and eat supper in the condo.. Lots of plus's to this plan. Enjoy !

Any of you guys go to Ft. Walton Beach? It’s just west on the causeway from Destin. It still gets busy, but not as bad as Destin from what I’ve seen. I think the building heights are limited in FWB…or maybe it’s just a coincidence.

I’m a bit more familiar with FWB having stayed there a handful of times. I’ve only been to Destin to go check out a restaurant recommendation.
