Why is rice-a-roni called the San Francisco treat?

Rice-A-Roni was created in 1958 by Vince DeDomenico of San Francisco's Golden Grain Macaroni Company. Inspired by an Armenian rice pilaf recipe shared by a family friend, Pailadzo Captanian, Vince combined dry macaroni, rice, and chicken seasoning into a box. It was famously branded as "The San Francisco Treat"

Rice-A-Roni became one of the most heavily advertised convenience foods of its era, becoming iconic for its television jingle and imagery. The marketing heavily leveraged the city's famous cable cars and scenic vistas to solidify the brand's identity as "The San Francisco Treat".After being bought by Quaker Oats in 1986, and subsequently acquired by PepsiCo, Rice-A-Roni continues to be a staple in the boxed-side market, with production heavily tied to California.
