If you’ve been grinding Topside since the Splash Flashpoint update dropped, you’ve probably seen players deploying a strange metallic device that zaps everything in sight. That’s the Surge Coil. It’s quickly becoming one of the most powerful utility items in the game, completely changing how squads handle aggressive Arc swarms and sweaty PvP engagements.

However, getting your hands on one isn’t as simple as checking a trader or hitting a fixed spawn point. To craft and use the Surge Coil, you have to find and extract its rare blueprint, which is uniquely tied to a specific world map condition. Here is a natural breakdown of exactly where to look, how to farm it efficiently, and how to use it to mess with the enemy AI.

Hunting the EM Storm: Blueprint Locations
The absolute golden rule of hunting the Surge Coil blueprint is understanding that it does not have a static, 100% guaranteed spawn location. Instead, it drops entirely from general industrial and residential loot containers. The catch? It will only enter the loot pool when the Electromagnetic (EM) Storm map condition is active. If there is no storm, the blueprint simply won’t exist in the world.

Before you deploy, always check your Topside map to ensure an EM Storm is active on one of these target maps:

Dam Battlegrounds: By far the most popular and reliable map for farming. If you drop here, run a loop through high-density container zones like the Testing Annex, Water Treatment Facility, Hydroponic Domes, Electrical Substation, Generator Area, and the central Control Room.

Blue Gate: If you prefer residential looting, focus your search entirely on the Village. It offers a massive density of residential furniture and houses clustered close together.

Spaceport: For players who know their way around vertical, structural layouts, search high-density areas like the Trench Tower.

Buried City & Stella Montis: These maps are massive, so don't wander aimlessly. Target localized, high-tier loot hubs where containers are concentrated, such as the Grandioso Apartments, the Santa Maria Houses, or the main Stella Montis Lobby and Atrium.

Best Farming Methods for Maximum Efficiency
Because the EM Storm condition only rotates into the game briefly—typically for a short window every few hours—efficiency is key. You shouldn't play these runs like standard matches. Your only goal is volume per minute. Do not wait around for specific world events like Close Scrutiny; instead, move swiftly through areas like the Blue Gate Village or the Dam Primary Facility to open as many containers as humanly possible before extracting.

Target the Right Containers: The blueprint spawns in everyday industrial and residential furniture. Keep your eyes peeled for white file cabinets, metallic desk drawers, lockers, cupboards, wardrobes, breachable grey containers, and industrial crates. Open absolutely everything you pass.

Check Locked Rooms: During EM Storms, locked rooms often provide double the normal loot value. Always bring keys along if you have them, as they give you a much higher statistical chance of pulling the blueprint from the containers inside.

Uses and Strategic Tactics
Once you successfully extract the blueprint and craft the Surge Coil, it serves as a deployable trap that emits periodic electrical zaps to stun and damage enemies. It completely changes the battlefield in several creative ways:

Crowd Control (CC): It excels at quickly wiping out or stunning small, aggressive Arc units like Ticks, Pops, and Fireballs before they reach your squad. It can also be placed defensively to trigger floating Comets to explode early at a safe distance.

PvP Anti-Rat Deterrent: If you are worried about squads sneaking up behind you or camping extraction, use the coil as a trap. Place it at the top of long ziplines or right outside tight choke points. If an enemy player tries to push, it will shock them, knocking them down or exposing them to an incredibly easy counter-attack.

Enemy Distraction (Lure): Large, terrifying threats like Shredders treat the coil exactly like a lure grenade. They will instantly drop what they are doing to agro onto it. If the coil manages to get two consecutive zaps off before being crushed, it can briefly lock the Shredder down completely, buying your team precious time to reload or reposition.

The "Arc-Flipping" Trick: This is where things get truly creative. If you manage to place a Surge Coil directly on top of an active Arc unit (like a flying Hornet), its AI pathfinding glitches out completely. The target will begin flying erratically, prompting nearby friendly Arcs and massive Bastions to misinterpret its behavior, accidentally opening fire and destroying their own ally for you.
