It's good to keep in mind that regional areas differ within their own boarders as well. Georgia isn't a shit state just because much of the Atlanta area is shitty. Maryland isn't a shit state just because much of the beltway is shitty. Oregon isn't a shit state just because the I-5 corridor is shitty. Same thing with California.

What is fairly safe to say is the farther from the large metro-population centers you go - the less looney lefty crap you see. That's not a hard and fast rule, but as a general rule of thumb it hold true.

One of the main problems is disenfranchised conservatives living in Cali or Oregon, for example, feel the need to move to Florida, or Tennessee or Idaho. This exacerbates the problem.
