1909 - Arapahoe became the first American ship to use the S.O.S. distress signal.

1934 - The first inmates arrived at the federal prison on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay.

1949 - President Harry S. Truman nominated Gen. Omar N. Bradley to become the first chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

1952 - King Hussein of Jordan ascended the throne after his father had been declared mentally unfit.

1954 - A formal peace treaty took hold in Indochina, ending more than seven years of fighting between France and the Communist Vietminh.

1956 - Abstract artist Jackson Pollock died in an automobile accident on Long Island, New York at age 44.

1960 - The African nation of Chad gained its independence from France.

1965 - Following the arrest of a young black motorist, the predominantly black neighborhood of Watts in Los Angeles erupted in riots that lasted six days and left 34 dead.

1991 - Shiite Muslim kidnappers in Lebanon released two Western captives: Edward Tracy, an American held nearly five years, and Jerome Leyraud, a Frenchman who'd been abducted by a rival group three days earlier.

1992 - The Mall of America, the largest shopping mall in the country, opened in Bloomington, Minnesota.

1993 - President Bill Clinton named Army Gen. John Shalikashvili to be the new chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, succeeding the retiring Gen. Colin Powell.

2006 - The Transportation Security Administration banned all liquids, gels and aerosols from passenger cabins on airliners one day after a thwarted terrorist attack.

2009 - Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister of President John F. Kennedy and founder of the Special Olympics, died at age 88.

2009 - Jeers and taunts drowned out Democratic lawmakers calling for a health care overhaul at town halls; during his own town hall in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, President Barack Obama assailed "wild misrepresentations" of his health care plan.

2012 - Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney announced his choice of Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin to be his running mate.

2014 - Academy Award winning actor and comedian Robin Williams died in Tiburon, California at age 63 as a result of suicide.

2017 - A federal judge ordered Charlottesville, Virginia to allow a weekend rally of white nationalists and other extremists to take place at its originally planned location downtown. (Violence erupted at the rally, and a woman was killed when a man plowed his car into a group of counter-protesters.)

1919 - The Green Bay Packers football club is founded by George Calhoun and Curly Lambeau. The team is named after sponsor Indian Packing Company.

1929 - Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees becomes the first major league player to hit 500 career home runs.

1968 - Sixty-two year old Satchel Paige, needing 158 days on a major league payroll to qualify for a pension, is signed by the Atlanta Braves.

1971 - Harmon Kilebrew of the Minnesota Twins became the 10th player in major league history to hit 500 career home runs.

1980 - Reggie Jackson of the New York Yankees hits his 400th career home run.

1984 - American track and field star Carl Lewis won his fourth gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympic Games, equaling Jesse Owens' feat from 1936.

1984 - The Cincinnati Reds retired Johnny Bench's #5.

1984 - At the Los Angeles Olympic Games, American runner Mary Decker fell after colliding with South African-born British competitor Zola Budd in the 3,000 meter final; Budd finished seventh.

1991 - John Daly wins the PGA Championship.

1993 - Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox pitches his 2,000th strike out.

2012 - Usain Bolt of Jamaica anchored his country's 4x100 meter relay team to a world record time of 36.84 seconds to take the gold at the London Olympic Games.

2015 - For the first time in history, all 15 Major League Baseball home teams won their games on the same day.

2016 - American swimmer Michael Phelps wins the 200 meter individual medley at the Rio Summer Olympics and becomes the first to win four consecutive gold medals in one event.
