1890 - The electric chair was used for the first time, in an execution of a convicted murderer at Auburn State Prison in New York.

1911 - Actress-comedian Lucille Ball was born in Jamestown, New York.

1914 - Austria-Hungary declared war against Russia, and Serbia declared war against Germany at the outbreak of World War I.

1926 - Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim across the English Channel, arriving in Kingsdown, England from France in 14 1/2 hours.

1942 - Queen Wilhemina of the Netherlands became the first reigning queen to address a joint meeting of Congress, telling lawmakers that despite Nazi occupation, her people's motto remained, "No surrender."

1952 - Satchel Paige, at age 46, became the oldest pitcher to complete a major league baseball game.

1953 - Future Hall of Famer Ted Williams returns to the Boston Red Sox following his military service in the Korean War.

1963 - The Philadelphia NBA franchise changes its name from "Nationals" to "76ers" in honor of the Declaration of Independence being signed in the city in 1776.

1966 - Muhammad Ali knocks out English boxer Brian London in the third round to retain the heavyweight title.

1969 - The first fair ball to be hit completely out of Dodger Stadium occurred. Willie "Pops" Stargell, of the Pittsburgh Pirates, hit the ball 506 feet from home plate.

1972 - Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hits his 661st home run, breaking Babe Ruth's record for most home runs hit for one team.

1973 - Roberto Clemente, Warren Spahn, Billy Evans, Monty Irvin, Mickey Welch and High Pockets Kelly are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1981 - Lee Trevino was disqualified from the PGA Championship in Duluth, GA when he had his scorecard signed by Tom Weiskopf instead of himself.
