1588 - English forces attacked the Spanish Armada, permanently crippling Spain's "invincible" fleet.

1786 - Dr. Michael-Gabriel Paccard and Jacques Balmat became the first to climb Mont Blanc.

1815 - Napoleon Bonaparte set sail for St. Helena, in the South Atlantic, to spend the remainder of his days in exile.

1844 - Brigham Young was chosen to lead the Mormons following the killing of Joseph Smith.

1876 - Thomas Edison patented the mimeograph machine.

1942 - During World War II, six Nazi saboteurs who were captured after landing in the U.S. were executed in Washington, D.C.; two others who cooperated with authorities were spared.

1945 - President Harry S. Truman signed the United Nations Charter.

1945 - The Soviet Union declared war against Japan during World War II.

1963 - In "The Great Train Robbery" some 15 thieves robbed the Glasgow-to-London mail train, making off with more than $6 million in cash.

1968 - Richard M. Nixon was nominated for president at the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach and chose Maryland Gov. Spiro T. Agnew to be his running mate.

1969 - Sharon Tate, wife of director Roman Polanski, and four others were murdered by members of Charles Manson's "family".

1973 - Vice President Spiro T. Agnew branded as "damned lies" reports he had taken kickbacks from government contracts in Maryland, and vowed not to resign — which he ended up doing.

1974 - President Richard Nixon announced to the nation that he would resign from office the following day as a result of the Watergate scandal.

1988 - U.N. Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar announced a cease-fire between Iran and Iraq.

1993 - In Somalia, four U.S. soldiers were killed when a land mine was detonated underneath their vehicle, prompting President Bill Clinton to order Army Rangers to try to capture Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.

2000 - The wreckage of the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley, which sank in 1864 after attacking the Union ship Housatonic, was recovered off the South Carolina coast and returned to port.

2002 - Saddam Hussein organized a big military parade and then warned "the forces of evil" not to attack Iraq as he sought once more to shift the debate away from world demands that he live up to agreements that ended the Gulf War.

2003 - The Boston Roman Catholic archdiocese offered $55 million to settle more than 500 lawsuits stemming from alleged sex abuse by priests. (The archdiocese later settled for $85 million.)

2005 - Iran resumed work at a uranium conversion facility after suspending activities for nine months to avoid U.N. sanctions.

2006 - Sen. Joseph Lieberman lost the Connecticut Democratic primary to political newcomer Ned Lamont. (Lieberman won re-election as an Independent.)

2008 - Former Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards admitted having had an extramarital affair.

2009 - A small plane collided with a sightseeing helicopter over the Hudson River in New York City, killing nine people, including five Italian tourists.

2014 - The U.S. unleashed its first airstrikes against the Islamic State group in northern Iraq amid a worsening humanitarian crisis.

2018 - The United States announced that it would impose new sanctions on Russia for illegally using a chemical weapon in an attempt to kill a former spy and his daughter in Britain.

1900 - The first David Cup tennis tournament began at the Longwood Cricket Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. The United States defeated Britain three matches to none.

1903 - Joe McGinnity (New York) pitched two complete games in one day. He won 6-1 and 4-3 over the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1920 - Howard Ehmke (Detroit Tigers) set an American League record when he defeated the New York Yankees 1-0 in 1 hour and 13 minutes.

1961 - The Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League defeated the Buffalo Bills 38-21 in Hamilton, Ontario in an exhibition game.

1970 - The New York Yankees retired Casey Stengel's #37.

1972 - The New York Yankees signed a 30-year lease with the City of New York which called for Yankee Stadium to be completely modernized in time for the 1976 season.

1976 - The Chicago White Sox wore shorts instead of traditional baseball pants in a game against the Kansas City Royals.

1992 - The United States won the gold medal in men's basketball at the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain after defeating Croatia 117-85 in the final. Considered by many to be the greatest team ever assembled, the "Dream Team" won all of their Olympic games by an average of 44 points. Members of the team were: Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Clyde Drexler, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Christian Laettner, Karl Malone, Chris Mullin, Scottie Pippen, David Robinson and John Stockton. The team was coached by Chuck Daly, who was assisted by P.J. Carlesimo, Mike Krzyzewski and Lenny Wilkens.

1996 - Eddie Murray of the Baltimore Orioles moved into 15th place on the all-time home run list with his 494th.

1998 - Paul Molitor of the Minnesota Twins stole his 500th career base.

2002 - Major League Baseball players and owners agreed to a $100,000 increase to baseball's minimum salary. The minimum salary was set at $300,000 beginning with the 2003 season.

2004 - John Elway is inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

2005 - Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky was named the next head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes.

2006 - Roger Goodell was chosen as the next commissioner of the NFL.

2008 - The Summer Olympic Games opened in Beijing, China.

I was in Mogadishu from January until the end of July in '93. If Clinton woulda had the balls to let my snipers take the shot, Aidid and Osama Bin Laden would have been dead in March of that year.

Apparently his balls were busy rubbing Monica's chin.
