1776 - The first scholastic fraternity in America, Phi Beta Kappa, was organized at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.

1782 - Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States and the first to be born after the country was formed, was born in Kinderhook, New York.

1791 - Composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died in Vienna, Austria at age 35.

1792 - George Washington was re-elected president and John Adams was re-elected vice president.

1831 - Former President John Quincy Adams took his seat as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

1848 - President James K. Polk triggered the Gold Rush of 1848 by confirming that gold had been discovered in California.

1872 - Having left New York on Nov. 5, the brigantine Mary Celeste was found adrift off the coast of Portugal with everyone aboard mysteriously missing.

1901 - Walt Disney was born in Chicago.

1932 - German physicist Albert Einstein was granted a visa, making it possible for him to travel to the United States.

1933 - The 21st Amendment to the Constitution, which repealed prohibition, was ratified when Utah became the 36th state to approve it.

1945 - Five U.S. Navy torpedo bombers mysteriously disappeared after taking off from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on a training mission with the loss of all 14 crew members; "The Lost Squadron" continued the legend of the Bermuda Triangle.

1952 - The Great Smog of London descended on the British capital; the unusually thick fog, which contained toxic pollutants, lasted five days and was blamed for ultimately causing thousands of deaths.

1955 - The American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations merged to form the AFL-CIO.

1994 - Republicans chose Newt Gingrich to be the first GOP Speaker of the House in four decades.

1996 - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan questioned whether the stock market was overvalued due to investors' "irrational exuberance".

2002 - Strom Thurmond, the oldest and (until Robert Byrd overtook him) longest-serving senator in history, celebrated his 100th birthday on Capitol Hill. (In toasting the South Carolina lawmaker, Senate Republican leader Trent Lott seemed to express nostalgia for Thurmond’s segregationist past; the resulting political firestorm prompted Lott to resign his leadership position.)

2004 - Hamid Karzai was sworn in as Afghanistan's first popularly elected president.

2006 - New York City became the first city in the nation to ban artery-clogging trans fats at restaurants.

2008 - A judge in Las Vegas sentenced O.J. Simpson to 33 years in prison (with eligibility for parole after nine years) for an armed robbery at a hotel room.

2008 - The Labor Department reported that an alarming half-million jobs had vanished in Nov. 2008 as unemployment hit a 15-year high of 6.7 percent.

2009 - An Italian jury convicted American student Amanda Knox of murdering her former roommate, British student Meredith Kercher, in 2007.

2013 - Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader who became South Africa's first black president, died at age 95.

2014 - NASA’s newest space vehicle, Orion, accomplished its first test flight, shooting out more than 3,600 miles from Earth for a hyperfast, hot return.

2014 - Rolling Stone magazine issued an apology and cast doubt on its story of a young woman who said she’d been gang-raped at a fraternity party at the University of Virginia. The magazine said it had since learned of “discrepancies” in her account.

2018 - Former President George H.W. Bush was mourned at a memorial service at Washington National Cathedral attended by President Donald Trump and former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter along with their spouses; former President George W. Bush was among the speakers, eulogizing his dad as "the brightest of a thousand points of light."

1908 - At the University of Pittsburgh, numerals were first used on football uniforms worn by college football players.

1943 - The merger between the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers dissolved.

1970 - The Stanley Cup, Conn Smythe Trophy and the Bill Masterson trophy were stolen from the NHL Hall of Fame.

1972 - Nebraska receiver Johnny Rodgers wins the Heisman Trophy.

1973 - Ron Santo of the Chicago Cubs became the first player in major league history to veto his trade. (The proposed trade would have sent him to the California Angels.)

1978 - Pete Rose signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in a four year deal worth $3.2 million, making him the highest-paid player in the game.

1981 - USC running back Marcus Allen wins the Heisman Trophy.

1983 - Steve Howe (Los Angeles Dodgers) was suspended for one year for cocaine use.

1983 - The video arcade game "NFL Football" was unveiled in Chicago. It was the first video arcade game to be licensed by the National Football League.

1987 - Notre Dame receiver Tim Brown wins the Heisman Trophy.

1992 - Alabama defeats Florida 28-21 in the inaugural SEC Championship Game, the first conference championship game in Division I football.

1995 - Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins set an NFL record with his 52nd career 300-yard passing game.

2000 - Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz passed Wilt Chamberlain and into second place on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

2002 - Michal Handzus (Philadelphia Flyers) became only the second NHL player to score an overtime goal on a penalty shot. The Flyers beat the New York Rangers 3-2.

2006 - Greg Maddux signs a one-year contract with the San Diego Padres worth $10 million.

2017 - Russia is banned from the Winter Olympic Games in South Korea over allegations of state-sponsored doping.
