1863 - The Battle of Gettysburg, which marked the turning point in the U.S. Civil War, began.

1859 - The first intercollegiate baseball game took place with Amherst defeating Williams 66-32.

1903 - The first Tour de France began. (It ended on July 19 with Maurice Garin the winner.)

1904 - The first Olympic Games held in the United States opened in St. Louis.

1905 - Frank Owen (Chicago White Sox) pitched two complete games in one day.

1917 - Fred Toney (Cincinnati Reds) pitched two complete games in one day.

1920 - Suzanne Lenglen became the first player to win three titles at Wimbledon in one year. She won the women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.

1932 - Helen Moody won her fifth women's singles title in six years at Wimbledon.

1941 - Joe DiMaggio extended his hitting streak to 44 games, tying the Major League record held by Willie Keeler.

1951 - Bob Feller set a major league baseball record when he pitched his third no-hitter for the Cleveland Indians.

1987 - New York City radio station WFAN-AM becomes the first 24-hour sports-talk format radio station in the country.

2011 - NBA owners lockout its players, which would shorten the season by 16 games before a salary agreement was reached.

2018 - LeBron James announced that he would be signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, leaving Cleveland for the second time in his career.

2019 - 15-year-old Coco Gauff, the youngest player to qualify at Wimbledon in the professional era, defeated 39-year-old Venus Williams in the first round.
