1566 - French astrologer, physician and prophet Nostradamus died.

1776 - The Continental Congress passed a resolution saying that "these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States."

1881 - President James Garfield is shot by Charles Guiteau at the Washington railroad station. (He would succumb to his wounds on September 19.)

1890 - Congress passed the Sherman Antitrust Act.

1917 - Rioting erupted in East St. Louis, Illinois as white mobs attacked Black residents; at least 50 and as many as 200 people, most of them Black, are believed to have died in the violence.

1937 - Amelia Earhart and her co-pilot Fred Noonan disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to fly around the world along the equator.

1962 - The first Walmart store opened in Rogers, Arkansas.

1964 - President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law.

1976 - In Gregg v. Georgia, the U.S. Supreme Curt ruled 7-2 that the death penalty was not inherently cruel or unusual.

1979 - The Susan B. Anthony dollar coin was released to the public.

1986 - Ruling in a pair of cases, the Supreme Court upheld affirmative action as a remedy for past job discrimination.

1990 - More than 1,400 Muslim pilgrims were killed in a stampede inside a pedestrian tunnel near Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

1997 - Actor James Stewart died in Beverly Hills, California.

2002 - Steve Fossett became the first person to circumnavigate the globe solo in a balloon.

2018 - Rescue divers in Thailand found alive 12 boys and their soccer coach, who had been trapped by flooding as they explored a cave more than a week earlier.

2020 - British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested in New Hampshire on charges that she had helped lure at least three girls -- one as young as 14 -- to be sexually abused by the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. (Maxwell would be convicted on five of six counts.)

2022 - The police chief for the Uvalde, Texas school district stepped down from his City Council seat amid criticism of his response to the mass shooting that left 19 students and two teachers dead.

1911 - Ty Cobb records a hit in his 40th consecutive game.

1933 - Carl Hubbell of the New York Giants pitches 18 innings of shutout baseball without a walk in a 1-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

1935 - Great Britain defeats the United States in the first international Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament, held in New York City.

1941 - Joe DiMaggio got a hit in his 45th consecutive game to establish a new MLB record.

1986 - Boston Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens suffers his first loss of the season after a 14-0 start, one win away from tying the American League record for consecutive wins to start a season.

1993 - The Kansas City Royals announce a name change of their stadium from Royals Stadium to Kauffman Stadium, honoring team owner Ewing Kauffman.

1994 - Colombian soccer player Andres Escobar was shot to death in Medellin. 10 days earlier he had accidentally scored a goal against his own team in World Cup competition.

1995 - Hideo Nomo became the first Japanese player to be selected for a major league baseball All-Star Game.

1996 - Alex Rodriguez became the third youngest player to be selected to the American League All Star team. Dwight Gooden and Ken Griffey Jr. were the two younger than Rodriguez.

2002 - A record 62 home runs were hit across 16 major league games held on this date.

2008 - A settlement is reached allowing the Seattle Supersonics NBA franchise to relocate to Oklahoma City; new owner Clay Bennett agrees to pay the city of Seattle $45 million to get out of the final two years of a lease of KeyArena.
