1512 - Michelangelo's paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel were shown to the public for the first time.

1604 - William Shakespeare's tragedy "Othello" was first performed, at Whitehall Palace in London.

1755 - An earthquake, fires and a tsunami leveled Lisbon, Portugal and claimed more than 70,000 lives.

1765 - The Stamp Act, the first direct tax on the American colonies, went into effect.

1861 - Gen. George B. McClellan was made general-in-chief of the Union armies.

1870 - The U.S. Weather Bureau made its first meteorological observations.

1936 - Benito Mussolini described the new alliance between Nazi Germany and Italy as an "axis" running between Berlin and Rome.

1946 - Karol Wojtyla, the future Pope John Paul II, was ordained as a priest in Poland.

1950 - Two Puerto Rican nationalists tried to force their way into Blair House in Washington to assassinate President Harry S. Truman. One of the assailants was killed.

1952 - The United States detonated the first hydrogen bomb in a test in the Marshall Islands.

1954 - Algeria began a successful rebellion against French rule.

1968 - The Motion Picture Association of America unveiled its new voluntary film rating system: G for General Audiences, M for Mature (later changed to GP, then to PG), R for Restricted and X (later changed to NC-17) for adults only.

1973 - Following the “Saturday Night Massacre,” Acting Attorney General Robert H. Bork appointed Leon Jaworski to be the new Watergate special prosecutor, succeeding Archibald Cox.

1979 - Former first lady Mamie Eisenhower died in Washington, D.C. at age 82.

1989 - East Germany reopened its border with Czechoslovakia, prompting tens of thousands of refugees to flee to the West.

1991 - Clarence Thomas took was sworn into as a justice on the United States Supreme Court.

1993 - The Maastricht Treaty was enacted, establishing the European Union.

1995 - Bosnia peace talks opened in Dayton, Ohio with leaders from Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia present.

2003 - Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean stirred controversy within his party by telling the Des Moines Register he wanted to be "the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks." (The former Vermont governor explained that he intended to encourage the return of Southern voters who had abandoned the Democrats for decades but were disaffected with the Republicans.)

2009 - CIT Group filed one of the largest Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings in U.S. corporate history. (CIT Group emerged from bankruptcy protection the following month.)

2014 - The national average price of gasoline fell to $2.995 per gallon, according to AAA, marking the first time in four years that the average price of gas was below $3 a gallon.

2018 - Thousands of Google employees around the world briefly walked off the job to protest what they said was the company’s mishandling of sexual misconduct allegations against executives.

1913 - Notre Dame upset Army 35-13. It was the first time the forward pass was used as a main offensive weapon in football.

1924 - The Boston Bruins become the first U.S. team to join the NHL. The Montreal Maroons also join the league.

1938 - Seabiscuit, with jockey George Woolf, beats 1937 Triple Crown winner War Admiral by three lengths at Pimlico track to win $15,000 in what many consider one the greatest match races in horse racing history.

1946 - First Basketball Association of America game; New York Knicks beat Toronto Huskies 68-66 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.

1950 - Celtics' forward Chuck Cooper becomes first African American to play in the NBA in Boston's 107-84 loss at Fort Wayne Pistons; future Hall of Famer Bob Cousy also debuts for the Celtics.

1959 - Jacques Plante, of the Montreal Canadiens, became the first goalie in the NHL to wear a mask.

1964 - Houston Oilers quarterback George Blanda attempts an AFL record 68 passes (37 completions) in 24-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills at War Memorial Stadium.

1964 - Jim Brown of the Cleveland Browns became the first player in NFL history to surpass 10,000 career rushing yards.

1966 - The NFL awards and expansion franchise to New Orleans, who select the nickname "Saints" to coincide with the November 1st "All Saints Day".

1966 - Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers becomes the first three-time Cy Young Award winner.

1968 - Detroit Tigers pitcher Denny McLain is named unanimous American League Cy Young Award winner after finishing the season with a 31-6 record for the World Series winning Tigers.

1987 - The New York Jets retire Don Maynard's #13.

1994 - The Chicago Bulls retire Michael Jordan's #23 in a two-hour ceremony at the United Center.

1996 - Shaquille O'Neal makes his debut with the Los Angeles Lakers in a 96-82 win over the Phoenix Suns. O'Neal scores 23 points and pulls down 14 rebounds in 35 minutes of action.

1998 - Steve Young and Jerry Rice hook up for their 80th career touchdown pass and catch in the San Francisco 49ers 36-22 loss to the Green Bay Packers, eclipsing the previous record of 79 held by the Miami Dolphins tandem of Dan Marino and Mark Clayton.

2000 - Pat Riley becomes joins Lenny Wilkens as the only coaches in NBA history with 1,000 regular season victories.

2001 - Dan Neil of the Denver Broncos was fined $15,000 for an illegal block that broke the leg of Bryan Cox of the New England Patriots.

2003 - Arkansas defeats Kentucky 71-63 in seven overtimes, tying the record for longest game in NCAA history.

2003 - John Gagliardi ties Eddie Robinson as college football's career victory leader with his 408th win, guiding Division III St. John's to a 15-12 victory over St.Thomas at St. Paul, Minnesota.

2003 - University of Pittsburgh wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald establishes a new NCAA record with a touchdown reception in his 14th straight game as Pittsburgh beats Boston College, 24-13.

2007 - Joe Torre, the winningest manager in major league postseason history, moves from the New York Yankees to the Los Angeles Dodgers with a three-year, $13 million contract.

2009 - Meb Keflezighi became the first American man in 27 years to win the New York City Marathon, in a time of 2:09:15.

2010 - The San Francisco Giants won their first World Series since moving from New York in 1958, defeating the Texas Rangers in five games.

2015 - The Kansas City Royals defeat the New York Mets in five games to win the World Series.

2017 - The Houston Astros win their first World Series, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games.

2018 - 20-year-old Russian Evgeni Malkin scores in the 1st period to become the first NHL player in 89 years with goals in his first 6 games as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Los Angeles Kings, 4-3.
