1312 - England's King Edward III was born at Windsor Castle.

1775 - U.S. forces, under the command of Gen. Richard Montgomery, captured Montreal during the Revolutionary War.

1789 - Benjamin Franklin wrote in a letter to a friend, Jean-Baptiste Leroy: "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."

1911 - The Supreme Court ruled that an unauthorized motion picture adaptation of the novel "Ben-Hur" by General Lew Wallace infringed on the book's copyright.

1927 - The world's first long, mechanically ventilated underwater tunnel, the Holland Tunnel, opened between New York and New Jersey.

1940 - The Walt Disney film “Fantasia,” featuring animated segments set to classical music, had its world premiere in New York.

1942 - The minimum draft age was lowered from 21 to 18.

1946 - Vincent Schaefer produced artificial snow from a natural cloud for the first time at Mount Greylock in Massachusetts.

1956 - The Supreme Court struck down laws calling for racial segregation on public buses.

1969 - Speaking in Des Moines, Iowa, Vice President Spiro T. Agnew accused network television news departments of bias and distortion, and urged viewers to lodge complaints.

1974 - Karen Silkwood, a technician and union activist at the Kerr-McGee Cimarron plutonium plant near Crescent, Oklahoma, was killed in a car crash.

1982 - The Vietnam War Memorial, designed by Maya Lin, was dedicated in Washington, D.C.

1985 - Some 23,000 residents of Armero, Colombia died when a volcanic mudslide buried the city.

1998 - President Bill Clinton agreed to pay Paula Jones $850,000 to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit.

2001 - President George W. Bush approved the use of a special military tribunal that could put accused terrorists on trial faster and in greater secrecy than an ordinary criminal court.

2001 - The Taliban abandoned Afghanistan's capital of Kabul when the Northern Alliance entered the city.

2002 - Saddam Hussein's government agreed to the return of international weapons inspectors to Iraq.

2003 - Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore was thrown off the bench by a judicial ethics panel after refusing to remove a granite Ten Commandments monument from the state courthouse.

2009 - Attorney General Eric Holder announced plans to try professed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four others in civilian court in New York City. (The Obama administration later backed off the plan.)

2014 - The European Space Agency published the first images taken from the surface of a comet; the photos sent back to Earth showed a rocky surface, with one of the lander’s three feet in the corner of the frame.

2018 - CNN went to court, demanding the reinstatement of the White House press credentials of correspondent Jim Acosta. (A federal judge later ordered the administration to immediately return Acosta’s press credentials; the White House then dropped its effort to bar Acosta but warned he could have his credentials pulled again.)

2018 - Amazon announced plans that it had chosen a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens and Arlington, Virginia, as the two locations for its new East Coast headquarters. (Amazon later abandoned its New York plans amid pushback from politicians and activists.)

1900 - The Baltimore Orioles, becoming the New York Highlanders in 1902 and then the New York Yankees in 1913, enter the American League.

1934 - Ralph "Scotty" Bowman (St. Louis Eagles) scored the first penalty shot goal in NHL history.

1964 - Bob Petit of the St. Louis Hawks becomes the first player in NBA history to score 20,000 career points.

1982 - WBA lightweight champion Ray Mancini beats South Korean challenger Duk Koo Kim by TKO in the 14th round in Las Vegas; Kim collapses, falls into a coma and dies four days later; as a result the WBC shortens all title bouts to 12 rounds; the WBA and WBO follow suit in 1988, and the IBF follows in 1989.

1991 - Roger Clemens of the Boston Red Sox wins his third Cy Young Award in the American League.

1992 - Riddick Bowe wins the undisputed heavyweight boxing title with a unanimous decision over Evander Holyfield in Las Vegas.

1995 - Greg Maddox of the Atlanta Braves becomes the first pitcher to win four consecutive Cy Young Awards.

2014 - Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers became the first pitcher to win National League Most Valuable Player honors since Bob Gibson in 1968.

2017 - Italy fails to qualify for the World Cup tournament for the first time since 1958.
