1851 - Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick was published.

1862 - During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln gave the go-ahead for Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside’s plan to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond; the resulting Battle of Fredericksburg proved a disaster for the Union.

1881 - Charles J. Guiteau went on trial for assassinating President James A. Garfield. (He was later convicted and hanged.)

1889 - Nellie Bly set out to beat Jules Verne's fictional Phileas Fogg's time of 80 days to travel around the world. She did it in 72.

1922 - The British Broadcasting Corporation began its domestic radio service.

1935 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed the Philippine Islands a free commonwealth.

1940 - German planes destroyed most of the English town of Coventry during World War II.

1965 - The U.S. Army’s first major military operation of the Vietnam War began with the start of the five-day Battle of Ia Drang. (The fighting between American troops and North Vietnamese forces ended on Nov. 18 with both sides claiming victory.)

1969 - Apollo 12, the second manned lunar expedition, was launched.

1972 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 1,000 for the first time, ending the day at 1,003.16.

1973 - Britain's Princess Anne married Capt. Mark Phillips in Westminster Abbey.

1986 - The Securities and Exchange Commission fined Ivan F. Boesky $100 million for insider stock trading.

1995 - The U.S. federal government began a partial shutdown of government services after Congress could not pass a budget.

1996 - Pop star Michael Jackson married his plastic surgeon's nurse, Debbie Rowe, in a ceremony in Sydney, Australia. (Rowe filed for divorce in 1999.)

1999 - The United Nations imposed sanctions on Afghanistan for refusing to hand over terrorist suspect Osama bin Laden.

2002 - Nancy Pelosi of California became the first woman to lead a party in Congress.

2003 - The most distant object ever found in our solar system, named Sedna, was discovered by astronomers at the Mount Palomar Observatory.

2004 - Mahmoud Abbas, successor to Yasser Arafat, escaped unharmed when militants firing assault rifles burst into a mourning tent for the deceased Palestinian leader in Gaza, killing two security guards.

2009 - President Barack Obama, on a mission to repair America’s global standing, told Asian countries during a speech in Tokyo that he was determined to engage them as equal partners in the economy, diplomacy and security.

2014 - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced the Pentagon would spend an additional $10 billion to correct deep problems of neglect and mismanagement within the nation’s nuclear forces.

1943 - Sid Luckman (Chicago Bears) became the first to throw for more than 400 yards. He threw for 433 yards and seven touchdowns against the New York Giants.

1964 - Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings sets an NHL record with his 627th career goal.

1966 - Muhammad Ali TKOs Cleveland Williams in the third round for the heavyweight championship.

1970 - A chartered Southern Airways DC-9 crashed while trying to land in West Virginia, killing all 75 people on board, including the Marshall University football team and its coaching staff.

1993 - Don Shula (Miami Dolphins) set a new NFL record with his 325th victory.

1995 - ESPN Radio acquired the exclusive rights to broadcast NBA games.

2018 - New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom wins NL Cy Young Award; his 10 wins fewest ever by a Cy Young winner in a non-strike-shortened season; MLB-leading 1.70 ERA; 29 consecutive start streak longest in MLB history
