1783 - Gen. George Washington issued his farewell address to the Army near Princeton, New Jersey.

1795 - James K. Polk, the 11th president of the United States, was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

1865 - Warren G. Harding, the 29th president of the United States, was born near Corsica, Ohio.

1889 - North Dakota and South Dakota became the 39th and 40th states of the Union.

1917 - British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour expressed support for a national home for the Jews of Palestine in what became known as the Balfour Declaration.

1947 - Howard Hughes flew his huge wooden airplane, the Spruce Goose, on its first and only flight.

1948 - President Harry S. Truman defeated Republican Thomas E. Dewey to the surprise of pollsters and newspapers, in one of the greatest presidential upsets in history.

1959 - Twenty-One game show contestant Charles Van Doren admitted that he had been given questions and answers in advance.

1962 - President John F. Kennedy delivered a brief statement to the nation in which he said that aerial photographs had confirmed that Soviet missile bases in Cuba were being dismantled, and that "progress is now being made toward the restoration of peace in the Caribbean."

1963 - South Vietnamese President Ngo Dihn Diem was assassinated in a military coup.

1976 - Democrat Jimmy Carter defeated President Gerald R. Ford to become the first U.S. president from the deep South since the Civil War.

1983 - President Ronald Reagan signed a bill establishing a federal holiday on the third Monday of January in honor of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

1984 - Velma Margie Barfield, a convicted murderer, became the first woman to be executed since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976.

2000 - American astronaut Bill Shepherd and two Russian cosmonauts, Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev, became the first residents of the International Space Station.

2003 - V. Gene Robinson was consecrated as a bishop by the U.S. Episcopal Church, becoming the first openly gay bishop in the church.

2004 - President George W. Bush was elected to a second term in office, defeating Democratic challenger John Kerry.

2006 - The Rev. Ted Haggard resigned as president of the National Association of Evangelicals after a man said they had had sexual trysts together.

2009 - Afghanistan's election commission proclaimed President Hamid Karzai the victor of the country's tumultuous ballot, canceling a planned runoff.

2010 - Republicans won control of the House of Representatives, picking up 63 seats in midterm elections, while Democrats retained a majority in the Senate; Republican governors outnumbered Democrats after gaining six states.

2010 - Californians rejected a ballot measure that would have made their state the first to legalize marijuana for recreational use.

2014 - Daredevil Nik Wallenda wowed Chicago and the world with two hair-raising skyscraper crossings on high wires without a safety net or a harness.

2018 - The Trump administration restored U.S. sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal but carved out exemptions for eight countries that would still be able to import Iranian oil.

2018 - The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said drug overdose deaths in 2017 had hit the highest level ever recorded in the United States, with most of the increase due to a record number of opioid-related deaths.

1938 - It was announced that Babe Ruth had applied for the job of manager of the St. Louis Browns after being released as a coach from the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1958 - Los Angeles Rams beat Chicago Bears, 41-35 before 90,833 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum; NFL single-game attendance record.

1964 - CBS purchased a 80% stake in the New York Yankees for $11.2 million.

1969 - Quarterbacks Billy Kilmer of New Orleans and St Louis' Charlie Johnson each pass for 6 touchdowns for combined NFL record of 12 passing TDs in a game; Saints beat Cardinals, 51-42 at Busch Memorial Stadium.

1969 - Gordie Howe, at age 41, of the Detroit Red Wings picks up his 19th and final hat trick of his career in a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins; becoming the oldest player in NHL history to record a hat trick.

1974 - The Atlanta Braves trade Hank Aaron to the Milwaukee Brewers.

1978 - Wayne Gretzky is sold to the NHL's Edmonton Oilers after just eight games with the Indianapolis Racers of the WHA.

1985 - The Los Angeles Kings score five goals in a span of 5 minutes, 37 seconds, the fastest in NHL history in an 8-1 rout of the Hartford Whalers.

1988 - A Mexican radio station had erroneously reported that boxer Mike Tyson had died in a car crash.

1990 - In the first regular season game played outside North America by any major professional sports league by the NBA's Phoenix Suns beat the Utah Jazz, 119-96 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in Japan.

1990 - The Golden State Warriors defeat the Denver Nuggets 162-158, the 320 points set an NBA record for highest combined score by two teams in a non-overtime game.

1991 - Nevada records the largest comeback in NCAA history to date, overcoming a 35-point 3rd quarter deficit to rally and beat Weber State 55-49.


1992 - Magic Johnson retired from the NBA for a second time, this time for good, due to his HIV infection.

1994 - The NFL announces that the expansion teams Carolina Panthers would compete in the NFC West while the Jacksonville Jaguars would compete in the AFC Central.

1996 - Miami Heat’s Pat Riley becomes eighth coach to win 800 games in 97-95 win at Indiana; milestone accomplished 2 weeks shy of his 15th coaching anniversary, faster than any coach in NBA history.

1997 - Eric Metcalf of the San Diego Chargers ties an NFL record when he returned two kicks for touchdowns in the same game, giving him a record 10 return touchdowns for his career.

1999 - NBA.com TV was launched.

2016 - The Chicago Cubs defeat the Cleveland Indians in seven games to win the World Series, the first championship for the franchise in 108 years.
