1800 - Spain ceded Louisiana to France in the secret Treaty of San Ildefonso. Although Napoleon Bonaparte agreed never to alienate Louisiana, he disregarded the treaty and sold Louisiana to the United States three years later.

1908 - Henry Ford introduced the first mass-produced automobile on the market -- the Model T. Each car cost $825.

1910 - The offices of the Los Angeles Times were destroyed by a bomb and fire; 21 Times employees were killed.

1936 - Gen. Francisco Franco became head of the insurgent Spanish government.

1937 - Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black delivered a radio address in which he acknowledged being a former member of the Ku Klux Klan, but said he had dropped out of the organization before becoming a U.S. senator.

1939 - Winston Churchill described the Soviet Union as "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma" during a radio broadcast.

1949 - Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China during a ceremony in Beijing.

1949 - A 42-day strike by the United Steelworkers of America began over the issue of retirement benefits.

1957 - The motto "In God We Trust" began appearing on U.S. paper currency.

1962 - Johnny Carson debuted as regular host of NBC's "Tonight Show".

1964 - The Free Speech Movement was launched at the University of California at Berkeley.

1971 - Walt Disney World opened in Orlando, Florida, 16 years after Disneyland opened in Anaheim, California.

1982 - Sony began selling the first commercial compact disc player in Japan.

1993 - Polly Klaas, age 12, was abducted from her Petaluma, California home during a slumber party and murdered. (Her case inspired California' three-strikes law.)

1996 - A federal grand jury indicted Unabomber suspect Theodore Kaczynski in the 1994 mail bomb slaying of advertising executive Thomas Mosser. (Kaczynski was later sentenced to four life terms plus 30 years.)

1996 - The federal minimum wage was raised 50 cents, to $4.75 per hour.

2001 - The Supreme Court suspended former President Bill Clinton from practicing law before the high court.

2008 - A $700 billion financial industry bailout won lopsided passage in the Senate, 74-25, after it was loaded with tax breaks and other sweeteners.

2015 - A gunman opened fire at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, killing nine people and then himself.

2015 - Officials in Michigan declared a public health emergency over the city of Flint’s water in response to tests that showed children with elevated levels of lead.

2015 - Oregon marijuana shops began selling for the first time to recreational users.

2017 - A gunman opened fire from a room at the Mandalay Bay casino hotel in Las Vegas on a crowd of 22,000 country music fans at a concert below, leaving 58 people dead and more than 800 injured in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history; the gunman, 64-year-old Stephen Craig Paddock, killed himself before officers arrived.

2019 - The Trump administration resisted efforts by Congress to gain access to impeachment witnesses; Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sought to delay five current and former officials from providing documents and testimony. Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, dismissed suggestions that President Donald Trump froze military aid to pressure Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden; the Ukrainian leader said no one explained to him why the aid was being delayed.

1903 - The visiting Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Boston Americans 7-3 in the first World Series game.

1919 - Eight players for the Chicago White Sox began their conspiracy to lose the World Series to the underdog Cincinnati Reds.

1922 - The former Chicago Staleys play their first game as the Chicago Bears, defeating Racine Legion 6-0 in Racine, Wisconsin.

1924 - MLB Commissioner Kenesaw Landis bans New York Giants outfielder Jimmy O'Connell and coach Cozy Dolan from World Series after they attempt to bribe Phillies shortstop Heinie Sand.

1933 - The New York Giants defeat the Green Bay Packers 10-7 despite not recording a single first down.

1945 - World heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis is discharged from the U.S. Army after being awarded the Legion of Merit.

1946 - The first playoff game for a league pennant was played, with the St. Louis Cardinals defeating the Brooklyn Dodgers 4-2 for the National League crown.

1946 - Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians recorded his 348th strikeout of the season, a major league record that would stand for 19 years.

1950 - Connie Mack appeared in his final game as manager for the Philadelphia Athletics. He was the longest serving manager in MLB history, managing for 49 years (1901-1950).

1961 - Roger Maris of the New York Yankees hit his 61st home run of the year, breaking the single-season record of 60 set by Babe Ruth in 1927.

1967 - Richard Petty continues phenomenal NASCAR winning streak by taking the Wilkes 400 at North Wilkesboro Speedway for an unprecedented 10th consecutive victory.

1975 - In "The Thrilla in Manila," Muhammad Ali defeats Joe Frazier in 14 rounds to retain his WBC/WBA heavyweight championship.

1977 - Brazilian soccer legend Pele plays his final game for the New York Cosmos in an exhibition contest against Santos in front of 75,000 at Giants Stadium; Pele scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 career games.

1984 - Peter Ueberroth replaces Bowie Kuhn as the sixth commissioner of Major League Baseball.

1988 - Steffi Graf becomes the first and only "Golden Slam" winner in women's tennis history, winning the Australian Open, U.S. Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the Olympic gold medal all in the same year.

1994 - NHL owners began a 103-day lockout of their players.

1995 - The New York Yankees and Colorado Rockies become the first wild-card playoff teams in MLB's new playoff system.

1995 - In their fifth game of the season, the Jacksonville Jaguars record the first victory in franchise history, a 17-16 win over the Houston Oilers.

1997 - Kevin Garnett, just two years out of high school, signs a record 6-year, $123 million contract extension with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

1999 - The Edmonton Oilers retire Wayne Gretzky's #99.

2000 - The United States men's basketball team, led by Ray Allen and Vince Carter, defeat France 85-75 to win the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

2004 - Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners records his 258th hit of the season, breaking George Sisler's 84-year-old single-season record. (Ichiro ends the season with 262.)

2006 - Albert Haynesworth (Tennessee Titans) kicked off the helmet of Andre Gurode (Dallas Cowboys) and then scraped his cleat across his head. Gurode required 30 stitches and suffered blurry vision from the attack. The NFL suspended Haynesworth for 5 games without pay. This was the worst suspension for onfield behaviour to date.

2017 - Former NFL star O.J. Simpson is released from Nevada's Lovelock Prison after less than nine years detention of his 33 year sentence for armed robbery and kidnapping.
