1226 - St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan order, died.

1863 - President Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day.

1922 - Rebecca L. Felton became the first woman U.S. Senator when she was appointed to serve out the remainder of the term of Sen. Thomas E. Watson.

1929 - The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes formally changed its name to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

1941 - Adolf Hitler declared in a speech in Berlin that Russia had been “broken” and would “never rise again.”

1944 - During World War II, U.S. Army troops cracked the Siegfried Line north of Aachen, Germany.

1955 - "Captain Kangaroo" and "The Mickey Mouse Club" premiered on television.

1970 - The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was established under the Department of Commerce.

1981 - Irish nationalists at the Maze Prison near Belfast, Northern Ireland, ended seven months of hunger strikes that had claimed 10 lives.

1990 - East Germany and West Germany united to become Germany, 45 years after being split into two countries at the end of World War II.

1991 - Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton entered the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

1995 - The jury in the O.J. Simpson murder trial in Los Angeles found the former football star not guilty of the 1994 slayings of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ronald Goldman (however, Simpson was later found liable for damages in a civil trial).

2001 - The Senate approved an agreement normalizing trade between the United States and Vietnam.

2003 - A tiger attacked magician Roy Horn of duo “Siegfried & Roy” during a performance in Las Vegas, leaving the superstar illusionist in critical condition on his 59th birthday.

2008 - O.J. Simpson was found guilty of robbing two sports-memorabilia dealers at gunpoint in a Las Vegas hotel room. (Simpson was later sentenced to nine to 33 years in prison; he was granted parole in July 2017 and released from prison in October of that year.)

2011 - An Italian appeals court freed Amanda Knox of Seattle after four years in prison, tossing murder convictions against Knox and an ex-boyfriend in the stabbing of their British roommate, Meredith Kercher.

2016 - The United States suspended diplomatic contacts with Russia over failed efforts to end the war in Syria while President Vladimir Putin put on hold a deal with the U.S. on disposing weapons-grade plutonium.

1914 - New York Giants pitcher Christy Mathewson strikes out 16 Cardinals in a 3-1 Giants victory over St. Louis; new MLB record; finishes the game in 1 hour, 15 minutes.

1920 - St. Louis Browns 1st baseman George Sisler collects his 257th hit of the season to set MLB record that lasts until the 21st century.; Browns beat White Sox, 16 - 7.

1950 - The New York Yankees sweep the Philadelphia Phillies to win the World Series.

1951 - In the "Shot Heard 'Round the World", Bobby Thomsen hits a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Brooklyn Dodgers a dramatic 5-4 playoff win over the New York Giants and the National League pennant.

1974 - Frank Robinson was named the first African American manager in Major League Baseball (Cleveland Indians).

1974 - Jerry West announces his retirement from basketball.

1976 - Hank Aaron singles in his final career MLB at-bat.

1989 - Art Shell became the first African-American head coach in the modern NFL when he took over the Los Angeles Raiders.

1990 - George Brett of the Kansas City Royals becomes the first player in MLB history to win a batting title in three different decades.

1997 - The Vancouver Canucks defeat the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim 3-2 in Tokyo, Japan, the first ever NHL game played outside of North America.

2001 - Barry Bonds (San Francisco Giants) broke Babe Ruth's major league single-season record for walks at 171.

2001 - Rickey Henderson of the San Diego Padres scores his 2,245th career run, tying Ty Cobb's MLB record.

2004 - Dating back to last season, the New England Patriots win their 18th consecutive game.

2004 - Dale Earnhardt Jr. used a vulgar term during a live postrace television interview with NBC after winning a race in Talladega. On October 5, NASCAR penalized him $10,000 and 25 points in the Nextel Cup standings.

2012 - Miguel Cabrera achieved baseball's first Triple Crown since 1967. He lead the league with a .330 average, 44 home runs and 139 RBIs in the regular season.

2020 - Swiss Skydiver became the sixth filly to win the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, beating Kentucky Derby winner Authentic by a neck; the race, run without fans because of the coronavirus, was rescheduled from May to October as the traditional second jewel in the Triple Crown was run last.
