1066 - William the Conqueror invaded England.

1542 - Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo arrived at present-day San Diego.

1781 - The closing campaign of the American Revolution at Yorktown Heights, Virginia began.

1787 - The Congress of the Confederation voted to send the just-completed Constitution of the United States to state legislatures for their approval.

1850 - Flogging was abolished as a form of punishment in the U.S. Navy.

1924 - Two U.S. Army planes landed in Seattle after completing the first round-the-world flight in 175 days.

1928 - Scottish medical researcher Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the first effective antibiotic.

1939 - A German-Soviet agreement divided Poland between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.

1962 - A federal appeals court found Mississippi Gov. Ross Barnett in civil contempt for blocking the admission of James Meredith, a Black student, to the University of Mississippi. (Federal marshals escorted Meredith onto the campus two days later.)

1967 - Walter Washington became the first mayor of the District of Columbia.

1972 - Japan and communist China agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations.

1989 - Former Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos died while in exile in Hawaii.

1991 - Jazz great Miles Davis died at age 65.

1995 - Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and PLO chairman Yasser Arafat signed an accord at the White House ending Israel’s military occupation of West Bank cities and laying the foundation for a Palestinian state.

2000 - Capping a 12-year battle, the government approved the use of the abortion pill RU-486.

2011 - The Obama administration formally appealed a federal appeals court ruling striking down a key provision of President Barack Obama’s health care law requiring Americans to buy health insurance or pay a penalty. (The U.S. Supreme Court later upheld the individual mandate.)

2016 - In a resounding rebuke, Democrats joined with Republicans to hand Barack Obama the first veto override of his presidency, voting overwhelmingly to allow families of 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia in U.S. courts for its alleged backing of the attackers.

2016 - Israeli statesman Shimon Peres died at age 93 after complications from a stroke.

2019 - Voters in Afghanistan went to the polls to elect a president for the fourth time since a U.S.-led coalition ousted the Taliban regime in 2001; the vote was marred by violence, Taliban threats and widespread allegations of mismanagement. (After a series of delays, the country’s independent election commission announced months later that Ashraf Ghani had won a second term as president.)

2020 - The worldwide death toll from the coronavirus pandemic topped 1 million, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University.

1919 - The New York Giants beat Philadelphia Phillies 6-1 in a day game that lasted 51 minutes. The time set a National League record.

1920 - Eight members of the Chicago White Sox were indicted on charges of throwing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds in what came to be known as the "Black Sox" scandal. (All were eventually acquitted at trial, but were banned from baseball for life.)

1941 - Ted Williams (Boston Red Sox) hit .400 for the season. He was the last major league player of the century to achieve this statistic.

1955 - The World Series was televised in color for the first time. The game was between the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1960 - Ted Williams hits the 521st and final home run of his career.

1969 - Joe Kapp of the Minnesota Vikings throws seven touchdown passes in a 52-14 win over the Baltimore Colts.

1974 - Nolan Ryan of the California Angels throws his third career no-hitter.

1976 - Muhammad Ali defeats Ken Norton in 15 rounds for the heavyweight boxing championship.

1986 - Rhode Island tight end Brian Foster catches an NCAA record 18 passes for 327 yards.

1988 - Orel Herschiser of the Los Angeles Dodgers breaks former Dodger Don Drysdale's record by pitching 59 consecutive scoreless innings.

1994 - The Ken Burns documentary miniseries "Baseball" airs on PBS.

1995 - Randy Myers (Chicago Cubs) was charged by a 27-year-old man while standing in the outfield. Myers saw him coming, dropped his glove and knocked the man down with his forearm.

1996 - Iowa State running back Troy Davis rushes for 378 yards in a game against Missouri, the third-highest single game rushing total to date in NCAA history.

1997 - Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals hits his 58th home run of 1997 (34 of which he hit while with the Oakland Athletics).

2003 - Althea Gibson, the first Africa-American tennis player to win a Wimbledon championship, died.

2020 - Brayden Point scored his playoff-best 14th goal and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Dallas Stars 2-0 to win the Stanley Cup and finish off a postseason that was staged nearly entirely in quarantine because of the pandemic.
