Everything that Kelly said to his team before leaving. Why would he not coach his team with a possible playoff berth? The CFP comittee said it may factor in their final top four. @Irishblooded

Kelly called a team meeting on Notre Dame's campus at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Roughly two hours later, LSU officially announced Kelly as the Tigers' new head coach.
Before then, though, the video shows Kelly being introduced by Notre Dame director of athletics Jack Swarbrick in front of Irish football players in an auditorium inside the Guglielmino Athletics Complex. The video was shot by an observer in one of the auditorium seats.
The video lasts a total of four minutes and 18 seconds. Kelly spoke for roughly three minutes and 40 seconds of that time. Read below for everything Kelly said before exiting the room silently and turning the floor back over to Swarbrick.

Former Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly briefly addressed the Irish before taking the LSU job. (Bill Panzica)

“Good morning, guys. Thanks for getting up here in short order, short notice. As you know, I sent out a text last night trying to give you as much notice as possible given the circumstances that we all know that happened relative to social media and information getting out.
"Look, I know we have been through this together. I recruited virtually everybody in this room. I want to be able to tell you face to face why we’re at where we’re at. That is, very simply, that the past 12 years have been the most incredible 12 years of my life for me and my family being here at Notre Dame. It’s magical what we’ve been able to build with the most incredible student-athletes, the ones that I’m looking at right now.
"So, many times people look in for a reason to blame or there was a reason for something — there was nothing here but first-class in everything that Notre Dame has done for me and my family. I saw my time here as a blessing working with incredible men on a day-to-day basis.

"But there comes a time where you look in your life for another opportunity. And I felt like it was time in my life for another challenge. And I saw that opportunity in a very short window and felt that it was best for me and my family to pursue a new challenge.
“So there is no one to blame. There is nobody that is at fault. Nobody did anything wrong. You guys have been the backbone of this program in what you've accomplished and will continue to do that.
"I think you’re one of the four best teams in the country. Jack [Swarbrick] is going to get somebody that will continue to lead this program in incredible fashion. I don’t know what it holds for us moving forward, but I hope to heck it means you’re playing for the national championship because you absolutely deserve it.

"So from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank every one of you for giving me this opportunity to speak to you directly because you don’t get that chance very often. And to thank you for allowing me to pursue what I love to do and that’s develop 18 to 21 year olds.
"You will continue to achieve at the highest level and have great success no matter what moves forward for you. So, again, thank you. I love each and every one of you. And for me, more than anything else, it’s a sad day but one where I know each one of you are going to do great things and you’ve got more to accomplish. So I wish everybody here the very best. And thank you for the opportunity that you’ve given me and my family. Thank you guys. Appreciate it.”

So everyone knows I'm not a big BK fan. And I haven't been for a long time. And a big part of the reason isn't so much the on the field stuff. Though that clearly lacks. But this stuff. The personality of BK. And I get it. This is a job and not about making people feel better. All of us that follow this sport to the level we do, know that at any given minute our team is an offer or contract away from 8-4 for years and years on end. Everyone that is going to read this has seen their team sit out a bowl season for whatever reason.

Kelly has been trying to leave ND for years. After the 2012 season he took multiple interviews with the league. After 2015 He interviewed quietly for the league and flirted with USC, after 2018 he interviewed at another school, and after 2020 he interviewed with the league.. And every time he did that. He came back to ND and said 'or else' and there was a raise, or an extension, or a new weight room, etc. This has been Kelly's M.O. for years. I think most of us faithful the hard core of ND fans gave up on him (or at least my last straw) was broken post NC State in the hurri-game where it was like 60 MPH winds and he threw the ball over 30 times. And then having lost that game, blamed it on the center for not being able to snap a shotgun snap. And when asked about his play calling and scheme said he called a good game and with hingsight wouldn't have changed. That is Kelly.

Now on the other side of it, he brought ND back to a respectable level of competition. Yeah he loses the big games. But that is Kelly more than that is ND. And someone else brought up the Declean Sullivan issue earlier. As someone that has legit read the multiple reports on that. I'm glad he wasn't dismissed for that. Because it wasn't really his fault for that. And if anyone wants to have an actual conversation about that, I'm game. But it will be fact based so make sure you have yours ready. But as with anything there are right and wrong ways to do things. And Kelly often picks the wrong way. For someone that wanted to go into politics for a big part of his life, his people skills suck.

I think the most telling thing of this, and it had been rumored after last year. Was that the ND AD had told Kelly no more. No more 'or else' it is a Natty by 2025 or get out. And when I watched the press conference by the AD yesterday when he talks about counter offer etc. It really caught me that when asked about a counter offer. He said he appreciated that Kelly didn't want a counter offer. And that goes with other reports I have seen over the last couple of years of the relationship between the two of them getting rough. Because the Boosters are tired of not seeing the success they expected by this point with Kelly.

So the TL:DR version. This is vintage Kelly, I'm glad he is gone. I tip my hat for the things he has done to help ND, and on to better options. Bring me Freeman!

I get it now. Do you think ND would have let him coach the bowl game/ possible CFP? Or did Kelly just say see ya later?

I don't think it would be an option. The ND AD is a pretty smart, calculating guy. And something like that, I don't think would have been in the interest of the program to have a guy there that isn't really involved. Because having a situation like that. Kelly isn't giving his best towards ND. And he literally has a financial reason to not make ND look good. His LSU contract is signed he doesn't need to impress anyone anymore. So now you are giving him access to potential recruiting targets, schemes, who has what responsibilities during the game, etc. Just a no bueno situation all the way around.

Confirmed that Jack Swarbrick is not at the college playoff meeting that he has been at every week up until now. And the only coach called off the road from recruiting in the last 48 hours was Marcus Freeman as soon as the Kelly thing happened. They are both in S. Bend today :)

Go Team Freeman

It ain't Fickell. If it were, we'd all be violated by his huge splooge. Imma guess Charlie Weis is coming home.

Actually the more I thought about it. The more I have been on the Freeman wagon the last couple days.

There is some issues with having it being Fickel.

Now. Freeman can be a complete bust. But also. I think his ceiling is higher. And there isn't the strings of Ohio St like there is with Fickel. My single biggest fear with Fickel is there is a ton of smoke that Ryan Day wants to go to the NFL. And he wants to go while his stock is high. If that were to happen. I don't think Luke Fickel would pick staying at ND over going to Ohio St.

You can’t “wait” with ESD and transfer portal. The second you start a new job you have to hit the ground to save and salvage any recruiting class. And the new transition class with the ESD is usually terrible so you gotta find any and all hits you can.

Also, it can’t be easy to coach a group of players for a month when they know you’re out the door and leaving them. Best to move on for both parties pretty quickly.
