The problem is for most of them their only success they have seen is Kelly. So they would rather have the known than the unknown. Nevermind the known has already left you once

I like Chip but he’s not an elite recruiter and he’s made questionable choices with his staff down at UCLA. I would have supported bringing Chip back but it’s hard to be upset about this move
 
In my experience coaches like that, once they get some years and money under their belt are never as hungry anymore. And in today's game. If you are not a relentless recruiter or you are someone like Saban, or Jimbo that has a history of success and achievements to recruit itself. Then you are going to play second fiddle to every quality commit. In my years of watching B. Kelly that was one of my biggest complaints with him. Once he got a contract extension or something like that. He would head for the golf course and put it on the coaching staff to put in the time and miles in getting recruits and then reach out to him to close the deal and show up for the photo op.

Whereas even as much as I think Harbaugh is snake oil, the guy is a heck of a recruiter. And in college if you want to play at the top levels you have to be.

Wilcox may also realize that winning 6 games and making a bowl is all the further he is going to get pushed. Cal doesn't make football a priority like Oregon does. And anyone not named Chip Kelly at Oregon is going to have huge shoes to fill.

So would you rather live under the gun constantly. Or just be able to enjoy work and work in your craft without the media on your ass everyday
