I've seen it asked online. It's a good question. But, if one IS frugal, and he worked a job, he could save up $2,000.

and since this was likely planned
well in advance,
(since he made the purchases,
soon after turning 18)
its plausible that he saved for several months -

if i was an investigator,
i'd request the SS records -
