Have you seen the 15 minute city yet? Paris is doing it now. Get everyone packed in where nothing they need is more than a 15 minutes walk.

Much of Europe has actually been set up this way for quite a while. Outside of the large cities, each village or town is fairly centralized, reducing your need for personal transportation. This is also why their rail system works so well and is so popular.
This system may work in the densely populated east coast, but definitely not for the more rural areas of America.

LOL, I'm an east coaster that needs 20 minutes to drive to the nearest city. Still pretty rural in my neck of the woods.
