Much of Europe has actually been set up this way for quite a while. Outside of the large cities, each village or town is fairly centralized, reducing your need for personal transportation. This is also why their rail system works so well and is so popular.Have you seen the 15 minute city yet? Paris is doing it now. Get everyone packed in where nothing they need is more than a 15 minutes walk.

This system may work in the densely populated east coast, but definitely not for the more rural areas of America.
