The year 2000 was my freshman year of college.

And I liked all sports... Watched just about everything there was... I did like college football all well and good... I didn't ever really have a team or a school I was a die hard fan of... Truth be told, the man I considered my grandfather was an Aggie... so I usually wanted them to win. But that all changed very rapidly...

2000 was my freshman year at Texas Tech... It was also the first year for a new head coach... Mike Leach

I remember going to my first Texas Tech home game... We almost lost to North Texas when they intercepted a pass with little time left (because running the clock out is boring) and almost took it to the house.. but a defender made a game saving tackle and recovered a fumble and Tech held on to win... I was hooked.

Then came the press conference from a guy I really didn't know... I was just enjoying a new life in a place and environment I never expected to be in. But upper classmen seemed excited to have a new head coach, and now I finally had a team to root for that was all my own and had a reason to be invested.

I don't remember the exact question but I remember Mike Leach saying something to the tune of "Football is a lot like doing surgery with a chainsaw, you have pieces flying all over the place and its messy.. You might have an arm fly off over here or a leg over there"

I had never really heard such an odd answer come from a head football coach that is for sure... I though "What the fuck is this guy talking about... He's our new head coach?" Hilarious!

Then I soon realized that Leach was NOTHING like any coach in any sport I ever saw.... and our team was not going to be like any other team.

My love affair with college football was born, and my obsession for wanting to throw a pass on EVERY. SINGLE. PLAY.

We finished that year something like 7-5... and a reporter asked Leach what bowl game he would like to attend as his first one as head coach.. His response? "I think I'd like to play in the Rose Bowl"

Over the years came the pirate flags and my fat little girlfriends, and the rest is a fun filled history of the most entertaining years of football l will probably ever experience.

Now, I could go on probably for pages and pages about the topic but I'll stop there.

Mike Leach was something special to me and I am sad.

But I am so glad that I got to experience having him as the coach of my University. And while it may not have ended at Tech the way any fan would have liked... I always considered him "our" coach, and we sort of just let others borrow him. I happily cheered for him in Pullman and Starkville and I am happy their fan bases got to have him for a time as well. I always enjoy talking to Wazzu and Miss St. fans anytime I see them places. The Leach bond is strong, and will probably be 10 fold now.

Rest in peace coach. The sport and the world was better for having you.

so many great memories for me and my family, as well -
too many to even begin to list -

such a beloved coach,
10 straight years bowl-bound,
and we had the pirate flags flyin at the last alamo -

i'll always treasure the fond memories -
thanks, Coach Leach!

Holy shit. Where you been, bro. I been looking everywhere for you. Hope life has been good to you.

Life has been... life I would say.. I think the last time I was around was right when the rona hit and my father had just passed... well I lost my mom not too long after.. so life has been an interesting trip since then.

I threw it all to the wind, I put my shit in storage and started driving around and traveling and just enjoying life.... I work only part time as needed... I tell most folks I'm "part time retired"

I truly had to dig deep into my brain on what forum to go to now after the rivals nonsense.. and somehow remembered here... I knew I had to write out my sadness for Leach and I knew just the folks that would at least appreciate it.

I think about all of you guys often though.

Sorry to hear about your parents, bro. I'm fortunate to still have my Mama. Happy to hear that you're doing what you're doing. If your travels bring you to the Southeast Coast, we are gonna have to get together. I'll be in Missouri in October. I'll message you and let you know why. You might decide to be there too.

Things here have been interesting, but acceptable. Still working too much, but at least I'm only working days......for now. The wife had both hips replaced this year so I've been working as much as possible all year to make up for her being out of work for 7 months. She's much better now and back to work. We have a new grandson, he just turned 9 months old. He's done stole my heart.
