Lane Kiffin and the decision he makes in the near future will have a significant impact on multiple programs, as well as the careers of countless players, coaches and ADs. He has all the options and all of the leverage.
Despite Ole Miss being vocal about their “expectation“ that Kiffin accept or decline their offer after the Egg Bowl, they’re not going to move on if he doesn’t meet the deadline. It’s a tough spot for them, it’s the right move to make a generous offer and try to retain him. But, they have no leverage at all.
It gets interesting if Kiffin decides to take another job before the season is over. For the sake of argument, let’s say Ole Miss wins today and will be in the CFP. If you’re Ole Miss, do you let him coach in the CFP? If you are the school who hired Kiffin (LSU for example), do you let Kiffin coach Ole Miss to a potential national championship?
It gets even more muddled if Ole Miss loses today…the selection committee will likely have to decide which 10-2 team gets left out. If Kiffin will not be coaching Ole Miss, they could be that team.
If Kiffin does take another job soon, the new team will want him working the portal on their behalf. There are also likely a decent number of good players who would follow him to a new school…unless Kiffin was still coaching them in the CFP while the portal is open.
A lot of people are waiting on Kiffin, and those that don’t get what they want are going to be especially bitter this time around.
