The SCOTUS didn't "nullify" anything. They had no jurisdiction. The extreme gerrymandered Democrat map was thrown out by the state supreme court because the way Democrats went about it violated the state constitution. The SCOTUS can only rule on the federal constitution. They get no say over a state's constitution unless it in some way violates the federal constitution which this clearly did not.
