You know it's always amazing to me how much meat costs in a store. I always keep one of my own to eat so I don't buy any. I just googled steak prices and a rib eye at Sam's club is 9.39 /lb. And the national average for ground beef was 3.80/lb. I just sold some feeder steers Tuesday for 1.48 /lb. To a feeder that will need to put another 700 lbs on them before market, and fat cattle were selling for about 1.21/lb on the live cash market today. Now I realize that there must be an increase in price for each step of the process from the packing plants to the grocery, and that they have Bill's to pay too, But it's quite the difference. So at that price a 1400 lb steer will gross roughly 900 pounds of meat so the plant is paying $1694 on a live basis or about 1.89 /lb of meat.
