I had to put down one of my bulls today. I assume he got ganged up on by a couple other bulls. He broke something up in his hip or high up in the rear leg. Couldn't hardly stand up. Nothing I could do but put him out of his misery. There went 5 grand

Hate that for ya'.

Call Omaha Steaks, they are bound to be looking for inventory this time of year.

Those bastards are worse than Jehova's Witnesses.

Actually that is what is happening now. A neighbor/hunting buddy wanted him so I said have at it. I dont want to eat a 6 year old bull, would be rather tough and probably won't have a good taste to it but whatever he wants to do. And trust me it's not like he's hungry. He's got the equipment to butcher it so it's not a big hassle either. He and his dad bought all the equipment out of an old meat locker so it will get processed pretty quick.

Have you ever had their steaks? My brother sent me one of their packets one year for Christmas, tasted like an old bull I assume. :sneaky:
My dad just got a Christmas gift packet from a buddy and we've had some before.

For me, it's been hit and miss, but the filets have been pretty good.

That being said, I can make a cheap steak taste pretty damn good, but it's still no substitute for the real deal.

59 cents/pound round steak pan fried was right tasty after I got done with it in college. I still make the best home fries that I have ever had. Yeah it dates me, but those were great times...

You know it's always amazing to me how much meat costs in a store. I always keep one of my own to eat so I don't buy any. I just googled steak prices and a rib eye at Sam's club is 9.39 /lb. And the national average for ground beef was 3.80/lb. I just sold some feeder steers Tuesday for 1.48 /lb. To a feeder that will need to put another 700 lbs on them before market, and fat cattle were selling for about 1.21/lb on the live cash market today. Now I realize that there must be an increase in price for each step of the process from the packing plants to the grocery, and that they have Bill's to pay too, But it's quite the difference. So at that price a 1400 lb steer will gross roughly 900 pounds of meat so the plant is paying $1694 on a live basis or about 1.89 /lb of meat.

any idea how beef becomes prime, choice, or select.. is that part of the raising or the heritage ?
