so long story short, a bit over a year ago, I was driving an 11 Silverado,, driving 30 miles one way to work,, and decided I wanted to downsize for better gas mileage.. I traded it in for a 12 Tacoma,, 4wd,, 4 cylinder automatic.. the loss of power is horrible.. sometimes I have to jam the gas pedal to the floor to get up the mountain bypass near my house.. and, I have a hard time getting in and out of the damn thing, its just too damn small..
the other day my boss sent me on an errand to the tire store in his 3500 Denali.. it gave me the fever..
Now I dont need that much truck, but I do want a full size (1500) truck with good features,, doesnt have to be the best,, but more than base..
what would be your preference between these and why:
Tundra,, Silverado, F-150, GMC, Ram, Titan
I want 4WD but its not an absolute must,, and I want the double cab for the extra space.. I'm looking in the 16~18 model year range..

I could talk for an hour on this, but in the year range you're targeting, all make damn good trucks and have had very few recalls or TSB's.

Obvious advice, but if you don't have a preference, I'd drive them all and go with the best deal and whatever fits you best. And if you think you may need 4wd, get a 4wd.

If you decide on a F-150 with an ecoboost, which will blow the doors off the other trucks, (I'm an admitted Blue Oval guy but this is fact), add an oil catch can. It's cheap insurance for a turbo engine.

What is this?

The good old truck wars is coming. Can’t speak for F-150 range but let me throw out experience here. I don’t care much about name brand, just give me something reliable.

I’ve went from Ford to a Chevy truck for 2 reasons. (1)Ford was always in the shop. (2) Chevy (05) was a great buying deal at the time. Still drive Chevy 15 years later.

Read the book, Gods middle finger. Basically all the Mexican drug dealers in the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico drive Toyota trucks because they are the toughest. How’s that for an endorsement 😆.

What is this?
It eliminates the pcv or crankcase vent from depositing oil on the back of the valves.

With a boosted application, turbo or supercharger, the crankcase pressure is much higher and can exacerbate the issue.

Imagine on an older motor the valve cover breather had immense pressure and was plumbed back into the intake manifold.

A catch can grabs that oil and keeps it from getting to your top end.

I’ve had all of the big 3, Dodge, Chevy, and Ford. My current truck is a 2015 F150 King Ranch. I love this truck! It will literally blow the others away on power. It has the 3.5 L eco boost in it. 365 hp, 425 ft lbs of torque. It will go 0-60 in 6.2 seconds. The newer models have even more hp and torque. This half ton truck is rated at 11,200 lbs towing capacity. The model does have a history of problems with the IWE on the front axles though. It uses a vacuum system to engage and disengage the 4x4 drive, and the diaphragms can break causing the 4wd to stay engaged. It’s my only complaint. I’ve got 88k miles on mine and replaced one IWE. Oh , IWE is integrated wheel end, basically it’s the vacuum controlled locking hub and bearing for the front drive axles.
All three trucks are good trucks. My complaint with the Dodge was all the little stuff... interior headliner coming loose, knobs falling off, etc.
I didn’t have any major complaints with my Silverado, but I wouldn’t trade my F150 for one.
Drive one, hell drive all 3. And romp down on the pedal, and watch and feel the acceleration. You’ll be impressed.

I'm actually leaning toward the F-150,, buddy at work has one, 6 cylinder with ecoboost in the king ranch trim,, he says he has great power and pretty good MPG's too..

I drove a 18m Tundra limited yesterday at a dealer,, it was awesome,, handled great,, bunch of great features,, we set the cruise on 65 and were coming up on a car that was turning,, it automatically slowed down to about 25 as we approached and then after the car turned, it sped back up to 65 without ever touching a pedal :) I liked that..
but they didnt get their heart right and I had to walk :)

My F150 has the adaptive cruise control as well. It will also parallel park itself.

I drive all of them (my post retirement "job" involves driving for a big auction company and I drive everything from dealerships to auction or from the auction to dealerships)

My favorites to drive are Silverados or GMCs, but the gap between them and the F150 is small. I prefer the dash setup in the GM trucks, and the 6.2 V8 is awesome. Visibility is great in both brands, Up here in the NE, you never see a Ram that isn't rusting out within 3 years, the Tundras are generally gas hogs and underpowered- at the same time, no less.

I'd be fine with either one of the GM trucks or the F-150 and those are all I would consider if it was my money.

This is the kind of information I want..
Now a short story and a question..

the Silverado I aquired (from my son, dont ask) was Fubar.. so I had to do major work to it to get it drivable.. first the engine wasnt running good at all.. I cant even describe it.. but I took it to a guy I know that works at a chevy dealership and does work at home in his large well equipped garage.. He had to replace 1 lifter that was stuck, so while that side was torn down, he recommended replacing all the lifters on that side.. I agreed, $1500 bucks.. after that,, it still ran bad and he said he thought it was a transmission issue.. He also told me these engines were notorious for problems if you dont change the oil religiously at 3K.. (I think that was the issue ((son again)) )
I took the truck to aamco (dont trust shadetree guys on transission work and wanted a warranty on the work), Transmission was fucked,, 6 speed,, re-manufactured transmission $3500

the question part,, are Chevys, GMC's, Ford's Reliable or do they stay in the shop for this that and the other??

Neither the engine nor the transmission you had in your 2011 are in the new ones, So I wouldn't worry about either. But yeah, I'd certainly do the required maintenance.

The new 10 speed trannys are a shared Ford-GM design for both. Minor tweaks are made by both companies during production.

My brother and his son each bought brand new f-150s extended cab, ecoboost, 4x4 are loving them. No problems nearly a year in.

Also, if you are getting blowback through the pcv valve, I've heard you can add a Fram FV-308 pcv valve. It has a one way valve.

BTW- the Ford Raptor is every bit as good as you may have heard it is
I'm sure it is 😲 .. How can people justify spending 56K on a vehicle that will start depreciating immediately.. I'm having a hard time with this,, most of the brand new half tons i'm looking at are 40grand.. I guess im just too old.. I cant figure it out..
unless your using your vehicle to make you money, (other than just taking you to work)

I'm just about to settle in on a model,,
Ford F-150 6 cyl ecoboost 4x4 Lariat,, maybe a couple of years old.. Looking in the 30 to 35K range
Silver or Gray exterior, with Dark Leather interior..
