The conferences of college football are boring. It’s hard to consider the Power 5 the true Power 5. The SEC has presented the best team in the country more often than not in the 2000’s but is it really deep? You get Bama, Auburn, LSU (finally again), and more recently UGA. The bottom half of the SEC is marginally good at best. No way it can be a power conference. Then the ACC. Clemson is dominant of course but who is there all throughout the regular season. Florida State has had a fall since Famous Jameis left, one so large that the only fall greater was that of Lucifer from Heaven. There is no clear challenger and it is definitely not a power conference. The Big Ten presents Ohio State, another perennial powerhouse. Wisconsin can be considered a part of the elites because they win the division every year and Michigan and Penn State are borderline, depending on whether you wanna count non-conference winners with 10 wins every year. The Big 12 is dominated by Oklahoma. The conference has really come full circle since Mack Brown left UT. Who knows what to make of the Pac12??? Boise St would be a perennial top 3 team there so I won’t even dive in. The point is, there are not 5 power conferences. The only two conferences with more than 2, nigh I say 1, power teams are the SEC and Big Ten. With the current state of CFB, the near future looks as it will continue to be Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and whatever assortment of SEC teams, (most likely Bama, UGA, maybe LSU???.) those programs are recruiting on an extreme level, developing players, and are only getting better and better.
With that being said here’s my great idea which of course is nonsensical because the CFP committtee/NCAA will serve its own needs, not the programs, players, or fans. But nevertheless here we go:
10 REGULAR SEASON GAMES
8 CONFERENCE-2 NON
32 TEAM PLAYOFF- 5 GAMES
3 “POWER” CONFERENCES
East American Conference
Ohio St
Clemson
Penn St
Florida
Florida St
Miami
UGA
Tennessee
UCF
Virginia
North Carolina
Cincinnati
Central American Conference
Bama
Auburn
LSU
Wisconsin
Michigan
Notre Dame
Iowa
Iowa St
Kentucky
Mississippi St
Minnesota
Memphis
Western American Conference
Oregon
Boise St
Utah
USC
Oklahoma St
Stanford
Oklahoma
Texas
Baylor
Washington St
Arizona St
Washington
TOP 4 IN EACH CONFERENCE GET AUTO BID TO PLAYOFF
BOTTOM 4 IN EACH CONFERENCE ARE RELEGATED TO A NON “POWER” CONFERENCE
TOP 4 TEAMS FROM NON “POWER” CONFERENCE IN EACH REGION ARE BROUGHT UP TO THE “POWER” CONFERENCE (those power rankings would be determined by the BCS formula)
For Example:
In the East, if Miami, FSU, Florida, and Virginia finished in the bottom 4, and the top 4 eastern teams in the non power conference were VA Tech, Florida Atlantic, Maryland, and Pittsburgh, then VT, FAU, Maryland, and PITT would be moved up.
Finally, the PLAYOFFS, would be determined by the top 4 teams in each power conference. The other 20 teams would be determined by their respective BCS power rankings.
Ultimately, this would provide more competition for the current dominators, a more enjoyable experience for fans, and an opportunistic format for teams like 2017 UCF or 2019 UGA who believed they could and would challenge for a title.
While this has been perfect in theory nothing this cool will ever be implemented but nonetheless what else does another football junkie have to do at midnight? Assemble my ideal College Football format,THATS WHAT!
