Dark Horse Heisman Odds and Big Ten QB Rankings

That is true the man is fearless!! Good point on the tight window percentage cause I had to go look that up just now to actually see the numbers. I noticed a couple things on film regarding his big frame and ability to lower the shoulder. Sometimes he struggles with forcing a football when he has 10 yards of running room but risk/reward will even that out. He was good in tight window stuff, but missed some wide open receivers sometimes imo.

He's literally the "anti-Fromm". Don't get me wrong. I will always love me some Jake, but between him and Kirby, it seemed too cerebral and too safe more times than I was comfortable with.

I really am hoping Kirby finally figured out how to let his OC run the Offense and stay out of the damn way. If he don't do it for Monken, it will ruin his career at UGA pretty damn quick.

Can’t agree with you more. Polar-opposite of Fromm I’m so many respects. I was not a fan of Fromm cause I thought that he was the only reason they couldn’t get past Bama. If Kirby stays out of the way of the O, this team could very well take over CFB.

We all know that Lawrence and Fields are the obvious favorites, but a few names to keep an eye on from my perspective because of their odds (Vegas). My best top 5 value picks for the Heisman will account for the offensive system (stat producers), team success, players around him, and coaching. Here are my top 5...

Myles Brennan 25-1
Sam Howell 30-1
Kyle Trask 50-1
Ja'Marr Chase 100-1
Najee Harris 60-1

My thoughts are that Brennan has too much talent around him (not to mention his arm talent - check his HUDL), Howell proved himself last year as a true freshman and add this talent around him that Mack has been able to keep (Newsome and Brown) along with the 6th best-recruiting class in 2020. Trask is the most undervalued QB in the country and with explosive weapons around him in Grimes, Copeland, and Toney this team could explode. Ja'Marr Chase is the best WR I saw in all of college football last year and without Jefferson next to him, I expect him to even be better. Harris is my last pick because his talent and ability to bully defenders is something you don't see very often. Alabama has plenty of weapons at QB and WR, but expect Najee to be that leader and carry this team for Saban and Co.

I'd love to debate this more so drop some comments in and we can have some disagreements.

My Big Ten QB Rankings are as follows... I will put the school and the starter in parentheses:

14. Maryland (Jackson)
13. Northwestern (Johnson)
12. Purdue (Plummer)
11. Illinois (Peters)
10. Iowa (Petras)
9. Rutgers (Vedral) - Probably 12 or 13 if it's not Vedral
8. Michigan State (Lombardi)
7. Indiana (Penix Jr) - based on upside
6. Wisconsin (Coan) - to start the season, but once Mertz takes this offense over, "the roof is the ceiling"
5. Michigan (McCaffrey)
4. Minnesota (Morgan)
3. Nebraska (Martinez) - I'm hoping he can take the necessary steps forward unlike last year but his upside is there. Even if it's McCaffrey I still put it here because of the system and upside of these dual-threat QBs (and the weapons around them)
2. Penn State (Clifford)
1. Ohio State (Fields)

Let the arguments/debates begin. Can't wait for the season and hope this sparks that fire under all of us that we desperately need today!! Leave any reviews as well.

As a Buckeye fan here I appreciate some B10 posting! I think Penix could definitely be higher on the list. As purely a football fan I think Martinez is so dang fun but he hasn’t been able to put it together yet, hopefully he does. Personally I’d have Morgan at 3, maybe 2, Clifford was good but he could be super inconsistent and was laying eggs against some of the big dogs. And to me, McCaffrey seems like another disappoint for Mich fans, but then again is it ever the QBs fault there? Coaching is their problem. McCaffrey may have a better set of tools than the whole list minus Fields, Martinez, Clifford.

Trask will be more efficient IMO. Newman is a risk taker. Frankly, I like that. It's a Risk/Reward thing. Remember...Deshaun Watson threw 17 INTs in 2016 for Clemson. But he also threw 41 TDs and won a Natty.
That risk taking, gun slinging mentality is what works in CFB. I’m sure it’ll be a good change for you Dawg fans who haven’t seen somebody with that kinda big play ability since maybe D.J. Shockley??? Matt Stafford?

Mike Leach for Heisman!!! Finally has some Elite level recruits!

I think Penix has the talent but hasn’t been able to prove it because of the weapons around him and his ability to stay healthy. As far as Martinez, he had it freshman year but regressed his sophomore year. I think upside wise with a healthy OL and RB he can find it. He’s so talented and especially with the Frost system he is in. Martinez has a problem deciphering zone coverage. He was the worst in the Big Ten against it and below average against cover 2. Against cover 1 and other man looks he is damn crisp which is why I feel like he is so close so therefore number 3 for me. McCaffrey is a big question mark to me as well but with that kind of arm talent I give him a good chance. Shea struggled on bullet passes in tight windows because of his limited arm strength. Dylan has that which is why I give him a good chance. Coaching is the problem in Ann Arbor and holds them back even though I like Harbaughs approach to recruiting and to the game.

I would say Matt Stafford. You are right though gunslingers prevail in CFB and are starting to I think he pros as well. Dawg fans are in for something special.

I agree. The loss of Darryl Williams is huge along with others. I think he can recruit well even though he’s an odd character. Costello will still be able to sling it around because Leach’s system works. It worked at Wash St, but this is a whole new level of competition. I can’t wait to see what happens.

I've noticed something with several Running backs mostly at Bama cause thats what I pay attention to,, but most of them when they come in the game as freshmen for relief of a starter, seem to look awesome and we tend to really raise the expectations of that RB..
When Najee used to come in the game in relief of Damien Harris and/or Josh Jacobs, he used to reel off 7 or more yard on the regular, then last year, it seemed that his production fell off when he became the premier back..
He seemed to get the ball in the backfield and immediately start juking and dancing trying to find a hole where as a freshman, he plowed through the hole or made a hole and then started to move in the mid level..
Najee has the size, speed, and durability to be great,, but must become a bulldozer at the line if he wants to get anywhere near 2000 yards.
just my opinion.. He'll see around 20 carries a game.

The wear and tear of CFB especially in the SEC is what it is. That’s why RB depth is so important even when you have a star. Najee getting 5-10 carries in relief allowed him to explode at 100% with little regard for defenders who were wearing down throughout the game. As a 20 carry guy you have to learn how to manage your body, as well as, picks and choose your fights. Najee is one of the better RBs I have seen and maybe a guy like Brian Robinson can take pressure off of him to give him “more healthy carries” if you get what I mean. Really good point though

It was the same when Swift was #3 behind Chubb/Michel. When your with the ones, it changes how you have to go about your game.

I don’t think Rocky Lombardi will end up as the starter for MSU, without spring practice and coaching it will be hard for him to fix his timing and accuracy issues. I think Mel Tucker will roll with RS Sophomore Theo Day over the RS junior Lombardi.
Under the circumstances, this is a throwaway year for a first year head coach anyway. In any event, the Heisman winner won’t be coming out of East Lansing.
