I've heard more than a few times that gas is NOT where gas stations make their money and that, on occasion, they'll sell gas at a loss to get butts in the door to buy their super marked up other stuff. As an example, I can buy 3 bananas at the grocery store and they cost me right around 40 cents total (or less) for the 3 of them. At the Handy Mart that shares the same parking lot with said grocery store, I can buy ONE banana for a dollar lol.
I know this as fact. Back when I was in the grocery business, one of our grocery stores sold gas. Typically our markup on our cost was 2 cents per gallon to stay competitive with the local convenience stores.
