We have persimmons around here that don't ripen at all unless you yank em from the tree. It might be a crabapple, too, from@
RuffledFeathers' post above - I just haven't ever seen one. The leaves look a little more sawtoothed for the crabapple than they did in the original picture, but I ain't no expert. (I am also dumb enough to have bitten into persimmons on more than one occasion.)

If it is a persimmon, it won’t hurt you to taste it, but your mouth will feel like every drop of moisture disappeared at one time .

That's a crab apple it looks like now. I was on the persimmon train until I saw this scale. At least in my experience persimmons are 2.5-4 times bigger.
