Before he returned to Rutgers as the program’s football coach, Schiano nearly signed a deal with Tennessee in 2017. However, the athletic department backed out due to the fan base’s negative reaction.

Herbstreit certainly thinks the Volunteers could use Schiano as their head coach right now.

“Everyone’s excited about Michigan. They’re 4-0, they beat Rutgers,” Herbstreit said, via 247Sports “By the way, Rutgers is better than when you hear ‘Rutgers.’ They’re better than that. Schiano, another coach who is doing really good work. And to think Tennessee kicked him out of the door before they could’ve had him is crazy.”


Rutgers currently owns a 3-1 record and should be well on its way to making a bowl game this season. The same thing cannot be said about Tennessee right now.

Schiano could have them in a competitive situation now. I firmly believe that. Beyond that, I don't see the Vols being what they used to be ever again. They were great when they recruited the state of Georgia very well. That's over.

No, I know exactly what happened. I’m sayin I don’t buy that he would have this amazing success at Tennessee. He’s at the only school he can succeed at right now. He would’ve fallen on his face at UT and last as long as Pruitt did.
