Just remember. It was ND holding Kelly back

All those times Kelly blamed the institution. Or the talking heads pointed at ND as holding back the brilliance that was Kelly. Or people on forums explaining that ND can't compete because they dont give their coaches what is needed.

Explain to me how Cignetti in year 2 is doing such much better at lowly Indiana than the great mind that is Kelly in year 4.

Not to mention that Marcus Freeman took ND to the title game, while Kelly missed the playoffs each year at LSU.

People forget Kelly had years to build his program and still couldn't take that next step. Cignetti's already maximizing what little Indiana has, while Kelly keeps spinning his wheels. The whole "ND held him back" argument never made sense.

I hear Marcus Freeman is going to be a top candidate for a lot of these open top jobs at Florida, LSU, PSU, etc.....

*Smiles*

I mean, both have played for a National title , both have playoff appearances, both have embarrassing upset losses at home, it’s not like Freeman’s shattered the glass ceiling the Irish have.

I dont know if you are being serious. Since you usually aren't.

But if you can't see the difference in what the two have done. Then me talking to you about it won't help.

He isn't leaving for one of those. If you spent time following Freeman you would know that isn't where he would leave for.

His next gig is either in the league or in Columbus.

Other than the “new coach smell” and the fact that Marcus is certainly more likable as a guy/coach. What has Marcus done that Kelly hasn’t? From an outsiders perspective. Other than a couple of playoff wins in the first year of the expanded playoff, it’s again, not like he’s broken through the alleged ceiling of Notre Dame.

Im sorry, but I just think we’re at a crazy point in this sport where coaches with .700 winning percentages are getting axed and we’re trying to pretend like they weren’t good coaches.

Good point. I think if a coach is fired (without just cause) with a .700 winning record and a multi year buyout remaining, that school should be penalized for breaking the contract.

To affect these schools (with a plethora of funds), I suggest the offending school should forfeit their share of the conference payout each year for the remainder of the broken contract. Giving your conference foes a bigger share of the conference payout, at your expense, would likely reduce casual firings. Five years buyout? Then pay everyone else with your conference payout for the next five years.

I blame the ADs with these ridiculous contracts. It has to stop if they expect to win immediately but give them these lifetime deals.

I do also. While you have to find a way of balancing competitive pay with results.

Writing these blank check contracts is insane. Paying a coach purely based on time and not on results gives them no motivation to succeed. I joked that with contracts like Jimbo and Kelly at LSU. They could literally not be in the stadium on game day and still get paid their salary. So long as they didnt get caught with Co-Eds.

These contracts have to start having tenure clauses and on the field result clauses. And it can't just be one guy. This is where you need an organization ala the NCAA to write a broad authority for outlines of contracts. So that if a coach fails to produce a contracted level of success they can be released without the school paying the full buy out.

Because and hear me. I dont care who it is paying ultimately for the buyout. There is a zillon better things that money could have been spent on than paying Kelly, Franklin, Jimbo, Weis, etc to sit on the beach with umbrella drinks and laughing at the school.

Like revenge.

ND doesn't have a glass ceiling. They have a direct path to the playoff. Don't lose 3 games and you're in. That they turn into a shitshow when they get there doesn't matter. ND in the playoffs makes money for the networks.
