I had basically the same experience in high school. For about ten years, just the smell made me want to puke, but now whenever someone wants to buy me a shot, I usually order tequila.

My 16th birthday, me and 3 friends hit the town strip on a Friday night. We got our hands on a fifth of two finger tequila. Every time one of them took a shot, I had to. They carried me up the steps when they took me home. I was still drunk the next day. tasted tequila for 2 weeks. It was many years before I drank tequila again.
