That's because, more often on the left than the right, they have turned their back on God. Call him what you want - God, a Higher Power, etc - there is a power that is greater than you are. He establishes what is true, what IS. Turning your back to God, trying to follow your truth is why people get lost. God is a guiding light, a "north star" and denying him, denying truth - one loses their way, they get lost. This causes all sorts of mental, emotional and spiritual problems.
