Penn State extends Franklin

We will see if it turns out to be a good coach. Right now I consider him in the same level as Kelly, Harbaugh, etc.

one step down from being elite. He wins the games he is supposed to. And can keep himself competitive in the national picture. But a lot of his second half coaching this year has really left me scratching my head.

I think our weaknesses at receiver and offensive line were worse than most realize. we only had two legit receivers if you count our TE, and run blocking was suspect. Our one power back also missed the last several games due to injury- it was a bad combination of things.

Again. We will see. I think a really good coach legitly needs 5 to 7 years to really get the program where the coach wants it to be

The coaches like Saban, Meyer, etc. That can just walk in the door and good undefeated or playoff contention in a year or two are the exception.

Also I think the fans all want to their coach is the next Saban or Meyer and expect that level of success year in and year out. Regardless. And that is just insane

So we will see. I think PSU had a good plan going into games. But Franklin just doesn't strike me as a good second half coach

Penn State is in the 3rd toughest Division to win right now. Let's see when Urban's magic fades and Day turns to Night. If Franklin can't beat the bucks 1 outta 2 years, he'll be looking for a job.

I hope we're that patient w/ Brown. I gotta say, we were only favored in two games all year.
To win five was more than most (realistic) Mountaineers expected. I'm not as afraid to face
off w/ FSU in the opener next year, haha!

Depending on the school, at Penn State, I would think that coach should be expected to field a competitive team each year.. Probably safe to say an average of 8 wins or more is the least tolerable.. you better sprinkle in some 10 win seasons,, and I'd say put yourself in Playoff contention every now and then.. Joe Pa only won 2 NC's in his 46 years as HC

I can tell you for sure that 8 win seasons won't get it.

My expectations would be 10 wins as the floor, with a B1G title every couple of years and being in the hunt for a Natty on a pretty regular basis. And I'm not as demanding as much of our fan base.

Those are really high expectations.. I understand the hell out of it.. but if you look around,,, not many coaches or teams can consistently achieve that.. I dont want to be saying that mediocre should be the goal.. It should not, (I dont think I need to tell anybody what the expectations of my fan base are) but a lot of good coaches get fired for not consistently winning 10 games.. there is just not room for everybody to win 10 every year.

I don't disagree- but we're one of that small number of programs with over 800 wins, and our bowl record is pretty stellar, too. When you sell out a 107,000 seat stadium you are in the high expectations neighborhood anyway. I'm not saying he won't be forgiven for a 9 win season now and then, but a steady diet of them won't be accepted.

Let the coaching rumors circle somebody else for awhile. I think he's going to be our guy for a long time.
Remember us from last year?

Probably will never play against you again, but good luck with Franklin and your bowl! 😁

I came in here to ask your opinion on Franklin.... I'm guessing by your post you approve.
I do. I was impressed by what he did at Vandy, and I've been impressed by how he handles himself at PSU. He did not walk into an ideal situation and he's been all class from recruiting to handling the press to what I hear his players say about him.

I thought it was going to be to big of a situation for him at the time. i was wrong...... Would have been really hard to find the right fit at that time.... Great hire...

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Franklin will give Penn State the opportunity to win NCs. Before it's all said and done, I think he wins at least one. Good for him and good for you Nittany Lion fans. But Todd Blackledge can still kiss my ass.
