I’m curious what SEC fans and anyone else who has seen a lot of UGA games think about drafting Jalen Carter at #6 in the NFL draft. I’m back on the Detroit Lions bandwagon for the first time since Barry Sanders retired. Foolish I know, but this HC and GM feel different, the HBO Hard Knocks series last year sucked me in.

The Lions have the 6th and 18th pick, along with 2 more 2nd round picks. The offense is very good, the defense is very bad. Jalen Carter seems to have major talent, but also lots of red flags (the drag racing incident, showing up fat to his Pro Day, questionable motivation, etc).

Any gut feelings? What do you think @OldDevilDawg ? The comments below from anonymous NFL scouts sound discouraging, but GMs put out plenty of disinformation prior to the draft.

I read that, but I’m skeptical that any GM offers legit analysis unless they have the #1 overall pick.

I’m wondering what people who watched him over the years think of him. Does the ability outweigh the sporadic effort? Would you roll the dice?

While I didn’t watch the Lions at the time, they got burned by drafting Nick Fairly high in the draft under similar circumstances. And he got to play next to Ndonkeykong Suh…

Carter is still a kid off the field. He's guilty of WAY less than I done when I was his age. After watching him every game for the last 2 years, if I were an NFL GM, I'd take him as soon as I could get my hands on him. He's an absolute game changer when the clock starts. Being around much older players (in NFL years, that's 4-5 years) he will mature into a multi time Pro Bowl leader. His work ethic perfecting his craft is second to none. His ability to affect an offense is second to none. He's one of the best defensive players I've seen in my 40-45 years of watching UGA's Junkyard Dawgs.

The Lions really need to get a plus player at DT, so Carter sounds perfect. Everyone seems to agree that he’s 1 of the 3 elite defenders in this draft (along with Will Anderson and Tyree Wilson), so drafting at #6 looked like No Mans Land…until Anthony Richardson went bonkers at the combine. Now, supposedly, there are 4 highly rated QBs, and 3 teams ahead of us need a QB…so we should get 1 of the 3 elite defenders.

But like I said earlier, teams and GMs are full of shit leading up to the draft. I just hope that if someone trades in front of Detroit that it’s to get a QB.

I've made it clear over the years that I'm not an NFL fan. Prolly been 30 years since I watched an NFL game. Strictly CFB. I have no idea what team needs what. All I know is all I know.
