RIP Bob Horner

As a 20 year old rookie, he hit 23 homers in only 323 at bats. That is a little more than half of a typical full season of at bats. That is a helluva productive stretch for someone who had never faced minor league pitching, let alone MLB pitching. Especially at a time when 30-35 homers was a career year. Had 153 hits in season 2.

His worst strikeout season was only 75 Ks.

I was fortunate enough to have met Dale Murphy during an on field meet and greet as a young Boy Scout back in 1980. At the old Fulton County Stadium back in the day, the Braves would have a discount day for Boy Scout troops. Horner was on the team at the time, but I missed meeting him. He was an absolute throwback "Babe Ruth" type player. He lived up to a hype that was beyond anything I can explain as a witness to those days.

It's been a rough year already for that old Braves team that was led by Chief Noc-a-homa from his Teepee above the left field fence. They've lost Ted Turner, Bobby Cox, and now Bob Horner. Can we all agree we need to find Dale Murphy and wrap him in bubble wrap?

Named my dog after Murph and had the poster in the bedroom. My favorite athlete of all time.
