The Team: #2 West Virginia

The Game: The Backyard Brawl

Summary: West Virginia was one game away -vs- unranked 4-7 Pitt from a national championship date with Ohio State. They lost 9-13 with star QB Pat White dislocating his thumb in the 2nd Quarter.

I seem to remember another big upset of a top 5 WVU squad that same year down in Tampa

It was almost as if RichRod had told his entire coaching staff the ride was over prior to the game, but forgot to tell the players they were on their own.

1997 was USF's first season playing football. You lost by 1(24-23) to perennial 1AA powerhouse Georgia Southern at home (Actually, Houlihan's stadium in Tampa). I knew then that USF was gonna have a quick building program. I'm an old DAWG of the UGA type, but I've followed Georgia Southern since Erk Russell left Athens to build the program in Statesboro in 1982 after 17 years as DC at UGA. Just out of curiosity, were you at that game?

I was not at that one but that season was magical we had no business getting so good so fast, to get into the big east in just 7 years of existing was awesome. Interestingly, I was at the upset of #5 WVU in 07 as a WVU fan! Both of my parents are WVU alum and I was not in college yet (and had no idea I would go to USF) so I was upset at the time but now give my family a hard time about it every chance I get 😂
