So what do we think of the bowls this year?

First off lets not mince words. Outside of the NY6 bowls.

There are a total of 3 ranked vs ranked bowls.

Citrus Bowl: 13 Bama vs 14 Michigan
Ouback: 12 Auburn vs 18 Minny
Holiday: 16 Iowa vs 22 USC

I do think there are a couple of really good match up in the smaller bowls that I think will be fun

Fun ones include:
UNC vs Temple in the Military
Okie St vs TAMU in Texas Bowl
ND vs Iowa State (first ever meet up)
Tennessee vs Indiana in the Gator

A 12-1 Appy St vs a 9-4 UAB seems kinda strange.
And Memphis w/o their coach. Could be real bad.

I was mad when I saw PSU get left out of the Rose.

But by the same hand, they have 0 excuses to not blow Memphis out of the water. Will be interesting to see if Norvell is even there to coach, I expect at best he will be there in spirit and have the game handled by the interim. I mean the highest ranked team on their schedule thus far was SMU at 15, and they won 54-48 in a shootout with them.

I expect to see some of the PSU backups before the 3rd quarter is over.

it is kind of a no win scenario for PSU

This would be the biggest win in program history I think for Memphis.

And I don’t see it happening. This isn’t Charlie Weis coaching. As long as PSU shows up. Which shouldn’t be a problem with it being a NYD bowl. It is an easy win.

What gets me is the "small schools" like Appy or Boise can go 3 points from a perfect season and we play a shit team in a shit bowl. We get 7-5 Washington in the Vegas Bowl (interestingly Coach Peterson's last game at UW).

I wish bowl tie ins worked differently. For instance, the Sun Bowl, with two teams with a combined record of one game over .500, one of which Boise beat this year, has a payout over twice the Vegas Bowl. Then we wonder why smaller schools can't recruit or pay their coaches as well... End rant...

Meh, we think that every year and yet G5 teams are 3-2 in the NY6 with the two loses by 8 points each.

Memphis will come to play and have the athletes to give PSU trouble.

The tie ins get me. Lotsa things could need some change. But with the goofs at the ncaa go and "fix" things it might be a bigger cluster eff then it is now. I read things on several sites and one big complaint is the orange bowl. But what you say is true.

Agree with both of you. While @Nod4Eight might not agree with me on this one, I think Boise versus AppSt would be a much better Bowl game with way more national interest than either team got with their pairings. Fact is, one loss teams are one loss teams. When you can go through a season with one loss at the FBS level, you deserve a high profile bowl against what appears to be an equivalently deserving team.

Disagree on "interest". I'd much rather watch a high end G5 team go up against a P5 team. And in this case, to see Coach Pete "finish" out his career against the program that both he made and made him is certainly a more interesting storyline than App St.

Fair enough. I get the storyline on Coach Pete playing Boise. It'll be a popular conversation for the talking heads. I'd like to see other matchups that make better games than matchups that people can talk about on TV. Not sure you know as much as I do about both Boise and AppSt and their history, but I understand that most don't. To me, that would be an amazing matchup and a much better game than either team got stuck with.

LOL I know plenty about App St and Boise St, enough to know that they're not moving the needle in a game against each other.

They not moving the needle with the matchups they have either. At least we would see a matchup that both teams deserve instead of one that talking heads can play with.
Most are not like us. They want to see the name brand teams play, not the ones who will provide the best games. This is why I was thrilled to be playing Texas in the Alamo vs Memphis in the Cotton. We recruit Texas heavily. Sexier game. Outside the semi's, they're all exhibition games anyway. Gives us something to talk about for years and the vast majority of the others don't give a shit a minute after the game is over. Yeah, I can be mercenary about it...
