1782 - Gen. George Washington created the Order of the Purple Heart, a decoration to recognize merit in enlisted men and noncommissioned officers.

1789 - Congress established the U.S. War Department.

1912 - The Progressive Party nominated Theodore Roosevelt for president.

1942 - U.S. forces landed at Guadalcanal, marking the start of the first major allied offensive in the Pacific during World War II.

1947 - The wooden raft Kon-Tiki, which carried Thor Keyerdahl and five companions more than 4,000 miles, crashed into a reef in the Pacific.

1959 - The United States launched Explorer 6, which sent back a picture of the Earth.

1961 - Yale psychology professor Stanley Milgram began conducting his controversial human behavior experiments concerning obedience toward authority figures.

1964 - Congress passed the Tonkin Gulf Resolution, which expanded President Lyndon B. Johnson's use of military powers in dealing with reported attacks from the North Vietnamese on American forces.

1971 - Apollo 15 returned to Earth after a manned mission to the moon.

1974 - French stuntman Philippe Petit walked a tightrope strung between the twin towers of New York's World Trade Center.

1987 - Lynne Cox became the first person to swim from the United States to the Soviet Union, making the 2.7 mile swim through the frigid waters of the Bering Strait. Cox is surprised by the warm welcome she received from the Soviets.

1989 - A plane carrying U.S. Rep. Mickey Leland (D-Texas) and 14 others disappeared over Ethiopia. (The wreckage of the plane was found six days later with no survivors.)

1990 - President George H.W. Bush ordered U.S. troops and warplanes to Saudi Arabia to guard the oil-rich desert kingdom against a possible invasion by Iraq.

1998 - American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed by terrorists. Some 224 people were killed and more than 5,500 injured in the blasts.

2000 - Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut was selected by Al Gore to be his running mate on the Democratic presidential ticket. Lieberman became the first Jewish-American on a major party ticket.

2005 - ABC News anchorman Peter Jennings died at age 67.

2008 - Georgia shelled the breakaway republic of South Ossetia. (Russia responded by occupying much of Georgia in a five-day war.)

2009 - Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin accused President Barack Obama of proposing a "death panel" that would decide who receives treatment in his health care plan.

2010 - Elena Kagan was sworn in as the 112th justice and fourth woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.

2014 - President Barack Obama authorized U.S. airstrikes in northern Iraq, warning they would be launched if needed to defend Americans from advancing Islamic militants and protect civilians under siege.

2014 - President Barack Obama signed a $16.3 billion measure aimed at helping veterans avoid long waits for health care.

2018 - Sharice Davids won a Democratic congressional primary in Kansas, becoming the state's first Native American and gay nominee for Congress. (Davids went on to become one of the first two Native American women elected to the House.)

2018 - Chicago police said they would deploy hundreds of additional officers to neighborhoods where a burst of gun violence over the weekend left at least 11 people dead and 70 wounded.

1907 - Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators wins his first game in a 7-2 decision of the Cleveland Indians.

1936 - Twenty-two nations completed in the first-ever Olympic basketball competition at the Berlin Games. Estonia defeated France 34-29 in the first Olympic basketball game.

1956 - 51-year-old Satchel Paige of the International League's Miami Marlins wins a game 6-2 against the Columbus Jets played at Miami's Orange Bowl stadium. The crowd of 57,000 was the largest ever for a minor league baseball game.

1972 - Yogi Berra, Sandy Koufax, Lefty Gomez, Early Wynn, Josh Gibson, Will Harridge, Buck Leonard, and Ross Youngs are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1978 - Eddie Mathews, Addie Joss and Larry MacPhail are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1984 - The United States wins its first gold medal in women's basketball at the Los Angeles Games after the Americans defeated South Korea 85-55.

1985 - A five-year agreement between the MLB Players Union and owners ended a two-day mid-season players' strike. The season resumed the next day.

1987 - The Pittsburgh Pirates retired Bill Mazeroski's #9.

1991 - Americans Carl Lewis, Mike Marsh, Leroy Burrell and Dennis Mitchell set a new world record in the 4x100 relay in Zurich, Switzerland with a time of 37.67.

1992 - The Orlando Magic sign their No. 1 draft pick, Shaquille O'Neal.

1999 - Wade Boggs of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays records his 3,000th career hit.

2002 - Major League Baseball players and owners agreed on the sports first tests for steroids.

2004 - Greg Maddux of the Chicago Cubs records his 300th career win.

2007 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit his 756th career home run, moving past Hank Aaron as major league baseball's all-time home run leader.

2010 - Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, John Randle, Russ Grimm, Rickey Jackson, Floyd Little and Dick LeBeau are inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

2016 - Ichiro Suzuki of the Miami Marlins becomes the 30th player in major league history to record 3,000 career hits.

2016 - Jim Furyk fires a 12-under-par 58 in the final round of the Travelers Championship at TPC at River Highlands in Connecticut. He became the first player to shoot a 58 in a PGA Tour event and the first to card two sub-60 rounds.

2016 - American swimmer Michael Phelps wins his 19th career Olympic gold medal at the summer games in Rio de Janeiro.
