1524 - Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama died in Cochin, India.

1814 - The War of 1812 between the United States and Britain ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent.

1818 - "Silent Night" was composed by Franz Joseph Gruber.

1851 - Fire devastated the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., destroying about 35,000 volumes.

1865 - The Ku Klux Klan was founded as a private social club by several Confederate army veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee.

1906 - Canadian physicist Reginald A. Fessenden became the first person to broadcast a music program over radio, from Brant Rock, Massachusetts.

1913 - 73 people, most of them children, died in a crush of panic after a false cry of “Fire!” during a Christmas party for striking miners and their families at the Italian Hall in Calumet, Michigan.

1914 - During World War I, impromptu Christmas truces began to take hold along parts of the Western Front between British and German soldiers.

1943 - Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower was appointed supreme commander of Allied forces in Europe by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II.

1968 - The Apollo 8 astronauts, orbiting the moon, read passages from the Old Testament Book of Genesis during a Christmas Eve telecast.

1980 - Americans remembered the U.S. hostages being held in Iran by burning candles or shining lights for 417 seconds -- one second for each day held in captivity.

1990 - Actors Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman married in a private ceremony at a Colorado ski resort. (The marriage ended in 2001.)

1992 - President George H.W. Bush pardoned former defense secretary Caspar Weinberger and five others involved in the Iran-Contra scandal.

2002 - Laci Peterson was reported missing from her Modesto, California, home, by her husband, Scott, who was later convicted of murdering her and their unborn son.

2009 - The U.S. Senate passed health care legislation, 60-39, in the chamber's first Christmas Eve vote since 1895.

2009 - A woman jumped barriers in St. Peter's Basilica and knocked down Pope Benedict XVI as he was walking down the aisle to begin Christmas Eve Mass; the pope was unhurt.

2018 - An 8-year-old boy from Guatemala died while in the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection; he was the second immigrant child to die in December while in the agency’s care.

2018 - A federal judge ordered North Korea to pay more than $500 million in a wrongful death suit filed by the parents of Otto Warmbier, an American college student who died shortly after being released from that country.

1950 - The Cleveland Browns defeated the Los Angeles Rams 30-28 in the NFL Championship Game.

1961 - The Houston Oilers defeated the San Diego Chargers 10-3 in the AFL Championship Game.

1967 - New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for more than 4,000 yards in a season.

1981 - Reggie Jackson announced he would join the California Angels for the 1982 season.

1982 - Chaminade, a Hawaii school with a student body of just 850 students, upset top-ranked Virginia 77-72 in a Honolulu holiday basketball tournament.

2000 - More than 36 minutes after the end of the game, both the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins were called back to the playing field. The teams had to play the final three seconds of the game which the Dolphins had won 27-24.
