1492 - Christopher Columbus established the first Spanish settlement in the New World.

1776 - George Washington defeated the Hessians at Trenton, New Jersey.

1799 - President George Washington was eulogized by Col. Henry Lee as "first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen."

1865 - James H. Nason received a patent for a coffee percolator.

1917 - The U.S. government took over operation of the nation's railroads during World War I.

1944 - During the World War II Battle of the Bulge, the embattled U.S. 101st Airborne Division in Bastogne, Belgium, was relieved by units of the 4th Armored Division.

1947 - Heavy snow blanketed the Northeast, burying New York City under nearly 26 inches of snow in just 16 hours; the severe weather was blamed for more than 80 deaths.

1966 - Kwanzaa is celebrated for the first time.

1972 - Harry S. Truman, the 33rd president of the United States, died in Kansas City, Missouri at age 88.

1996 - Six-year-old beauty pageant contestant JonBenet Ramsey was found murdered in her Boulder, Colorado home (The slaying remains unsolved to this day.)

2004 - In the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sumatra, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake, the world's largest recorded quake in 40 years, triggered a tsunami that ultimately killed nearly 300,000 people across dozens of countries in Southeast Asia.

2006 - Gerald R. Ford, the 38th president of the United States, died in Rancho Mirage, California at age 93.

2018 - President Donald Trump made an unannounced trip to Iraq to meet with U.S. troops, landing at an airbase west of Baghdad after dark for a visit that lasted around three and a half hours.

2018 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted its biggest-ever, single-day point gain, surging more than 1,000 points higher.

2018 - Japan announced that it was leaving the International Whaling Commission in order to resume commercial whale hunts for the first time in 30 years, but said it would no longer go to the Antarctic for annual killings that had been harshly criticized.

1908 - Jack Johnson became boxing's first black heavyweight champion when he knocked out Tommy Burns in Sydney, Australia.

1925 - The New York Americans and Pittsburgh Pirates set an NHL record by recording a combined 141 shots on goal in the Americans' 3-1 win; Roy Worters makes an incredible 70 saves for Pittsburgh and Jake Forbes has 67 for New York.

1943 - The Chicago Bears defeat the Washington Redskins 41-21 in the NFL Championship Game.

1954 - The Cleveland Browns rout the Detroit Lions 56-10 in the NFL Championship Game.

1955 - The Cleveland Browns defeat the Los Angeles Rams 38-14 in the NFL Championship Game.

1960 - The Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Green Bay Packers 17-13 in the NFL Championship Game.

1964 - The Buffalo Bills defeat the San Diego Chargers 20-7 in the AFL Championship Game.

1965 - The Buffalo Bills defeat the San Diego Chargers 23-0 in a repeat of the previous year's AFL Championship Game.

1968 - Ted Green (Boston Bruins) set a National League Hockey (NHL) penalty record when he recorded 3 minors, 2 majors and 2 game misconducts.

1986 - Mark Messier of suspended for 10 games for instigating a fight with Jamie Macoun and breaking his cheekbone.

1986 - Doug Jarvis, age 31, set a National Hockey League (NHL) record as he skated in his 916th consecutive game. Jarvis eventually set the individual record for most consecutive games played with 964.

1992 - The San Jose Sharks snap a 13-game losing streak with a 7-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings.

2001 - Patrick Roy (Colorado Avalanche) became the first goalie to win 500 NHL games.

2004 - Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning broke Dan Marino's single-season touchdown pass record when he threw his 48th and 49th of the year in a win over the San Diego Chargers.
