1904 - The University of Chicago awarded blankets with the letter C to all seniors that played football during the 1903 season. This event marked the beginning of the sports letter tradition.
1922 - The NFL franchise in Decatur, Illinois moved to Chicago and changed their name from the Staleys to the Bears.
1958 - Roy Campanella (Brooklyn Dodgers) was seriously injured in an auto accident in New York. He would never return to play again.
1959 - The Soviet Union hands the United States its first loss in international basketball by a score of 62-37.
1959 - Vince Lombardi was named head coach of the Green Bay Packers.
1960 - The NFL awarded franchises to Dallas (Cowboys) and Minneapolis-St. Paul (Vikings).
1990 - The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Denver Broncos 55-10 in New Orleans to win Super Bowl XXIV. 49ers quarterback Joe Montana was named MVP.
1996 - The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17 in Tempe, Arizona to win Super Bowl XXX. It was the fifth Super Bowl championship for Dallas. Cowboys cornerback Larry Brown was named MVP.
2001 - The Baltimore Ravens defeated the New York Giants 34-7 in Tampa to win Super Bowl XXXV. Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis was named MVP.
2003 - The WNBA announced that Connecticut had been awarded a franchise for the 2003 season. The team, the Connecticut Sun, was the first WNBA team to be owned by a non-NBA owner (the Mohegan Sun).
