1790 - Congress authorized the first U.S. Census.

1803 - Ohio became the 17th state.

1815 - Napoleon, having escaped exile in Elba, arrived in Cannes, France, and headed for Paris to begin his “Hundred Days” rule.

1864 - Rebecca Lee became the first Black woman in America to be awarded a medical degree.

1867 - Nebraska became the 37th state.

1872 - Yellowstone became the world's first National Park.

1893 - Inventor Nikola Tesla first publicly demonstrated radio during a meeting of the National Electric Light Association in St. Louis by transmitting electromagnetic energy without wires.

1932 - Charles A. Lindbergh Jr., the 20-month-old son of Charles and Anne Lindbergh, was kidnapped from the family home near Hopewell, New Jersey. (Remains identified as those of the child were found the following May.)

1945 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt, back from the Yalta Conference, proclaimed the meeting a success as he addressed a joint session of Congress.

1954 - Four Puerto Rican nationalists opened fire from the spectators’ gallery of the U.S. House of Representatives, wounding five members of Congress.

1961 - President John F. Kennedy signed an executive order establishing the Peace Corps.

1966 - The Soviet space probe Venera 3 impacted the surface of Venus, becoming the first spacecraft to reach another planet; however, Venera was unable to transmit any data, its communications system having failed.

1971 - A bomb went off inside a men’s room at the U.S. Capitol; the radical group Weather Underground claimed responsibility for the pre-dawn blast.

1974 - Seven people, including former Nixon White House aides H.R. Haldeman and John D. Ehrlichman, former Attorney General John Mitchell and former assistant Attorney General Robert Mardian, were indicted on charges of conspiring to obstruct justice in connection with the Watergate break-in. (These four defendants were convicted in January 1975, though Mardian’s conviction was later reversed.)

1981 - IRA member Bobby Sands began a hunger strike in Maze Prison; he would die 65 days later.

2005 - Dennis Rader, the churchgoing family man accused of leading a double life as the BTK serial killer, was charged in Wichita, Kansas, with 10 counts of first-degree murder. (Rader later pleaded guilty and received multiple life sentences.)

2010 - Jay Leno returned as host of NBC's "Tonight Show" following the exit of Conan O'Brien, who had originally succeeded Leno.

2012 - Online publisher and conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart died in Los Angeles at age 43.

2015 - Tens of thousands marched through Moscow in honor of slain Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, who had been shot to death on Feb. 27.

2020 - State officials said New York City had its first confirmed case of the coronavirus, a woman in her late 30s who had contracted the virus while traveling in Iran. Health officials in Washington state, announcing what was believed at the time to be the second U.S. death from the coronavirus, said the virus may have been circulating for weeks undetected in the Seattle area.

2022 - In his first State of the Union address, President Joe Biden aimed to rally the American public to bear the costs of supporting Ukraine’s fight to stave off the massive Russian invasion.

1903 - Major League Baseball Rules Committee rule that pitcher's mound must not be more than 15 inches higher than the baselines or home plate.

1941 - Elmer Layden was named the first commissioner of the NFL.

1942 - Major League Baseball owners decide not to allow players in the military to play for their clubs when on furlough.

1949 - Heavyweight champion Joe Louis announced his retirement from boxing with a 66-3 record including 52 knockouts and a record 25 title defenses.

1967 - MLB Commissioner William Eckert approves the Baseball Writers Association of America's plan to name a Cy Young Award recipient from both the National and American Leagues.

1969 - Mickey Mantle announced his retirement from baseball.

1970 - Minnesota coach Charlie Burns becomes the final player/coach in NHL history, when he plays in the North Stars' 8-0 win over Toronto Maple Leafs; remains in role for final month of the season.

1970 - Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins becomes the first defenseman in NHL history to score 25 goals in a season.

1979 - The NCAA granted ESPN the exclusive rights to telecast collegiate events.

1981 - Houston Rockets guard Calvin Murphy misses a free throw in a 102-86 loss in San Antonio, ending his NBA record consecutive free throw streak at 78.

1988 - Wayne Gretzky (Edmonton Oilers) got his 1,050th assist to become the NHL's all-time assist leader. Gordie Howe had held the record for 26 years.

1993 - The NHL's new expansion team in Anaheim, California selected the nickname "Mighty Ducks."

1996 - Lenny Wilkens won his 1,000th game as an NBA coach.

1996 - The Dallas Mavericks set an NBA record with 44 3-point shot attempts in a game against the Vancouver Grizzlies.

1998 - Miami Heat head coach Pat Riley becomes the fifth coach in NBA history to win 900 games.

2003 - Legendary Mount St. Mary's basketball head coach Jim Phelan wins final game of 49 year career as Mountaineers win 60-56 over Central Connecticut State; Phelan: 830 wins in NCAA record 1,354 games.

2005 - The NHL's board of governors met and emerged fully behind Commissioner Gary Bettman and totally committed to having a season in the fall.

2016 - MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred sends a strong message on the issue of domestic violence; issues a 30-game suspension to NY Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman.
