1812 - An earthquake devastated Caracas, Venezuela, causing an estimated 26,000 deaths, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

1827 - Composer Ludwig van Beethoven died at age 56 in Vienna, Austria.

1874 - Poet Robert Frost was born in San Francisco.

1885 - The Eastman Dry Plate and Film Co. of Rochester, New York, manufactured the first commercial motion picture film.

1892 - Poet Walt Whitman died at age 72.

1911 - Playwright Tennessee Williams was born in Columbus, Mississippi.

1945 - The World War II Battle of Iwo Jima ended with approximately 22,000 Japanese soldiers being killed or captured in the fighting and more than 4,500 U.S. troops were killed.

1962 - In Baker v. Carr, the U.S. Supreme Court gave federal courts the power to order reapportionment of states' legislative districts.

1971 - East Pakistan proclaimed its independence and took the name Bangladesh.

1979 - In a ceremony at the White House with President Jimmy Carter, President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Israel signed a peace treaty ending 30 years of war between the two countries.

1982 - Groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

1997 - The bodies of 39 members of the Heaven's Gate techno-religious cult who had committed suicide were found inside a mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, California.

1999 - Dr. Jack Kevorkian was convicted of second-degree murder for giving a lethal injection to an ailing man whose death was shown on "60 Minutes".

2000 - Vladimir Putin was elected president of Russia.

2010 - The U.S. and Russia sealed the first major nuclear weapons treaty in nearly two decades, agreeing to slash the former Cold War rivals’ warhead arsenals by nearly one-third.

2010 - A South Korean warship exploded and sank near a disputed maritime border with North Korea, killing 46 sailors. (South Korea blamed North Korea, which denied involvement.)

2011 - More than 250,000 people took to the streets of London to protest the toughest spending cuts since World War II.

2011 - Former Democratic vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, the first female major party nominee for the office, died at age 75.

2013 - Italy's top criminal court overturned the acquittal of American Amanda Knox in the grisly murder of British roommate Meredith Kercher and ordered Knox to stand trial again. (Although convicted in absentia, Knox was exonerated by the Italian Supreme Court in 2015.)

2015 - Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signed a measure prohibiting state and local laws that “substantially burden” the ability of people to follow their religious beliefs; opponents charged the new law could legalize discrimination against gay people.

2018 - A toxicology report obtained by The Associated Press revealed that the late pop music superstar Prince had levels of fentanyl in his body that multiple experts described as “exceedingly high.”

2019 - The House failed to override President Donald Trump’s first veto, allowing him to steer billions of extra dollars to construct border barriers.

2019 - The Senate defeated a motion to take up the "Green New Deal", rejecting an opportunity to debate a comprehensive climate change plan offered by Democrats.

2019 - Prosecutors in Chicago abruptly dropped all charges against Jussie Smollett, the "Empire" actor who was accused of faking a racist, anti-gay attack on himself; though prosecutors said they still believed that Smollett had concocted the assault. (A grand jury revived the criminal case with new charges against Smollett in February 2020.)

1917 - The Seattle Metropolitans of the PCHA defeated the Montreal Canadiens of the NHL to win the Stanley Cup, becoming the first American team to win the Cup.

1931 - Boston Bruins coach Art Ross became the first NHL coach to pull his goalie for an extra attacker. The Bruins lost to the Montreal Canadiens in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Semifinals.

1949 - Kentucky defeats Oklahoma State 46-36 to win a second straight NCAA Tournament.

1952 - Kansas defeats St. John's 80-63 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1972 - The Los Angeles Lakers set an NBA record for most wins in the regular season by finishing the season with a record of 69-13. (The record would stand for 24 years before being broke by the Chicago Bulls and then again by the Golden State Warriors.)

1973 - UCLA defeats Memphis 81-76 to win a seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament.

1979 - Michigan State defeats Indiana State 75-64 to win the NCAA Tournament. The game marked the start of the legendary rivalry between future Hall of Famers Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

1992 - A judge in Indianapolis sentenced former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson to six years in prison for raping a Miss Black America contestant.

2010 - NBA player Gilbert Arenas was sentenced to 30 days in a halfway house for bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room.

2014 - The National Labor Relations Board ruled that college football players at Northwestern University could unionize.
