1834 - The city of York in Upper Canada was incorporated as Toronto.

1836 - The Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, fell as Mexican forces led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna stormed the fortress after a 13-day siege; the battle claimed the lives of all the Texan defenders, nearly 200 strong, including William Travis, James Bowie and Davy Crockett.

1857 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-2 in Dred Scott v. Sandford that Scott, a slave, was not an American citizen and therefore he could not sue for his freedom in federal court.

1912 - Oreo sandwich cookies were first introduced by the National Biscuit Company.

1930 - Clarence Birdseye started to sell prepackaged frozen food for the first time, in Springfield, Massachusetts.

1933 - A national bank holiday declared by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, aimed at calming panicked depositors, went into effect.

1944 - U.S. heavy bombers staged the first full-scale American raid on Berlin during World War II.

1957 - The former British colonies of Togoland and the Gold Coast united to become the independent nation of Ghana.

1970 - A bomb being built inside a Greenwich Village townhouse in New York by the radical Weathermen accidentally went off, destroying the house and killing three group members.

1981 - Walter Cronkite, "the most trusted man in America," retired as anchor of the CBS Evening News and was replaced by Dan Rather.

1998 - The U.S. Army honored three Americans who risked their lives and turned their weapons on fellow soldiers to stop the slaughter of Vietnamese villagers at May Lai in 1968.

2002 - Independent Counsel Robert Ray issued his final report in which he wrote that former President Bill Clinton could have been indicted and probably would have been convicted in the scandal involving former White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

2016 - Nancy Reagan, wife of President Ronald Reagan, died in Los Angeles at age 94.

2022 - A second attempt to evacuate Ukrainians from the besieged city of Mariupol collapsed as Russian attacks made it impossible to create a humanitarian corridor.

1922 - Babe Ruth signs a record 3-year contract with the New York Yankees worth $52,000 per year.

1923 - The St. Louis Cardinals announce their players will wear numbers on their uniforms, beginning a sports tradition.
1964 - Heavyweight boxing champion Cassius Clay officially changed his name to Muhammad Ali.

1972 - Jack Nicklaus passes Arnold Palmer as golf's all-time money winner.

1973 - Larry Hisle (Minnesota Twins) became baseball's first designated hitter. The spring-training exhibition game was against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1976 - American Dorothy Hamill wins the ladies world figure skating championship.

1982 - National Basketball Association history was made when San Antonio beat Milwaukee 171-166 in three overtime periods to set the record for most points by two teams in a game. The record was beaten on December 13, 1983 by the Pistons and the Nuggets when they played to a final score of 186-184

1983 - The USFL began its first season of competition.

1997 - Mike Gartner (Phoenix Coyotes) scored his 30th goal of the season. He set a record for scoring 30 goals in a season for the 17th time in his career.

2019 - LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers scores his 32,293rd career point to move past Michael Jordan into fourth place on the NBA's all-time scoring list.
