1789 - America's first inaugural ball was held in New York in honor of President George Washington, who had taken the oath of office a week earlier.

1812 - English poet Robert Browning was born in London.

1824 - Beethoven's 9th Symphony premiered in Vienna.

1833 - Composer Johannes Brahms was born in Hamburg, Germany.

1840 - Composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, Russia.

1847 - The American Medical Association was organized in Philadelphia.

1889 - Johns Hopkins Hospital opened in Baltimore.

1915 - The British ocean liner Lusitania was sunk by a German submarine during World War I off the coast of Ireland, killing nearly 1,200 people, including 128 Americans.

1928 - The minimum voting age for women in Britain was lowered from 30 to 21, the same age as men.

1939 - Germany and Italy announced a military and political alliance, the Rome-Berlin Axis.

1945 - Germany unconditionally surrendered to the allies in Rheims, France, ending its role in World War II.

1954 - The 56-day-long battle of Dienbienphu ended with Ho Chi Minh's forces defeating the French, signaling the end of French power in Indochina.

1963 - The United States launched the Telstar 2 communications satellite.

1975 - President Gerald R. Ford formally declared an end to the "Vietnam era." In Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) the Viet Cong celebrated its takeover.

1992 - The 27th Amendment to the Constitution, a 203-year-old proposed amendment prohibiting Congress from giving itself midterm pay raises, was ratified when Michigan became the 38th state to approve it.

1992 - The latest addition to America's space shuttle fleet, Endeavour, went on its first flight.

1994 - Edvard Munch's painting, "The Scream," was recovered a few months after it had been stolen.

1998 - The parent company of Mercedes-Benz agreed to buy Chrysler Corp. for more than $37 billion.

1999 - During action against Yugoslavia, NATO jets mistakenly bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, killing three and injuring 20.

2000 - Vladimir Putin was inaugurated as president of Russia in the country's first democratic transfer of power.

2004 - Army Pfc. Lynndie England, shown in photographs smiling and pointing at naked Iraqi prisoners, was charged by the military with assaulting the detainees and conspiring to mistreat them. (England was later convicted of conspiracy, mistreating detainees and committing an indecent act, and sentenced to 36 months; she served half that term.)

2008 - Dmitry Medvedev was sworn in as Russia's president.

2010 - A BP-chartered vessel lowered a 100-ton concrete-and-steel vault onto the ruptured Deepwater Horizon well in an unprecedented, and ultimately unsuccessful, attempt to stop most of the gushing crude pouring into the sea.

2015 - After years of sharing power, British Prime Minister David Cameron pulled off an unexpected election triumph that gave the Conservative leader a second term with an outright parliamentary majority.

2015 - A three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York ruled that the National Security Agency's bulk collection of millions of Americans' phone records was illegal.

2019 - Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law one of the nation’s most restrictive abortion laws, a measure that banned the procedure once a fetal heartbeat is detected. (A federal judge later blocked the law from taking effect.)

1945 - Baseball owner Branch Rickey announced the organization of the United States Negro Baseball League. There were 6 teams.

1959 - At Los Angeles Coliseum, a record 93,103 people watched the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the New York Yankees.

1969 - The Oakland Oaks defeated the Indiana Pacers in five games to win the ABA championship.

1972 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the New York Knicks in five games to win the NBA championship.

1977 - Seattle Slew won the Kentucky Derby on his way to winning horse racing's Triple Crown.

1982 - A federal jury ruled that the NFL violated antitrust laws by preventing the Oakland Raiders from moving to Los Angeles.

1994 - The Denver Nuggets became the first #8 seed to upset a #1 seed in the playoffs after they eliminated the Seattle SuperSonics.

1995 - The Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Indians played a game that lasted 17 innings over 6 hours and 36 minutes. The Twins won 10-9.

2010 - Before a record hockey crowd of 77,803, the United States lost to host Germany 2-1 in the opening game of the world ice hockey championships.

2006 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit his 713th career home run, one away from tying Babe Ruth for second place on the career list.

2015 - Alex Rodriguez passed Willie Mays into fourth place on the career home run list, hitting his 661st home run in the New York Yankees 4-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
