1782 - The United States and Britain signed preliminary peace articles in Paris, ending the Revolutionary War; the Treaty of Paris would be finalized in September of 1783.

1804 - Supreme Court Justice Samuel Chase was tried for political bias. (He was acquitted by the Senate.)

1835 - Author Mark Twain was born Samuel Longhorne Clemens in Florida, Missouri.

1900 - Irish author Oscar Wilde died in Paris at age 46.

1940 - Actors Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were married.

1960 - The last DeSoto was built by Chrysler, which had decided to retire the brand after 32 years.

1962 - U Thant of Burma was elected secretary-general of the United Nations, succeeding the late Dag Hammarskjold.

1966 - Barbados became independent of British rule.

1974 - The fossilized remains of a female human ancestor named "Lucy" (after the Beatles song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) were found in Ethiopia.

1979 - The album "The Wall" by Pink Floyd was released.

1982 - Michael Jackson's album "Thriller" was released by Epic Records and would go on to become the best-selling album of all time.

1993 - The Brady Bill, requiring a five-day waiting period for handgun purchases, was signed into law.

1993 - Authorities in California arrested Richard Allen Davis, who confessed to abducting and killing 12-year-old Polly Klaas of Petaluma.

1995 - President Bill Clinton became the first U.S. president to visit Northern Ireland.

1999 - The opening of a 135-nation trade gathering in Seattle was disrupted by at least 40,000 demonstrators, some of whom clashed with police.

2000 - Al Gore’s lawyers battled for his political survival in the Florida and U.S. Supreme Courts; meanwhile, GOP lawmakers in Tallahassee moved to award the presidency to George W. Bush in case the courts did not by appointing their own slate of electors.

2004 - Ken Jennings ended his 74-game winning spree on the game show "Jeopardy!"

2009 - Retired Ohio auto worker John Demjanjuk went on trial in Munich, Germany, accused of helping to kill 27,900 Jews as a Nazi death camp guard. (Demjanjuk was convicted in May 2011 of being an accessory to murder; he was sentenced to five years in prison, but was released while his conviction was under appeal; he died in March 2012 at age 91.)

2010 - Pentagon leaders called for scrapping the 17-year-old "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ban after releasing a survey about the prospect of openly gay troops.

2013 - Paul Walker, 40, the star of the “Fast & Furious” movie series, died with his friend, Roger W. Rodas, who was at the wheel of a Porsche sports car that crashed and burned north of Los Angeles.

2018 - George H.W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States, died in Houston at age 94.

2018 - On the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires, President Donald Trump and the leaders of Canada and Mexico signed a revised North American trade pact. (The agreement hasn’t yet been approved by U.S. lawmakers.)

1937 - Running back Clint Frank of Yale wins the Heisman Trophy.

1948 - Baseball's National Negro League disbands.

1954 - Wisconsin running back Alan Ameche wins the Heisman Trophy.

1971 - ABC-TV aired "Brian's Song." The movie was about Chicago Bears' Brian Picolo and his friendship with Gale Sayers.

1976 - Pittsburgh running back Tony Dorsett wins the Heisman Trophy.

1991 - In the first Women's World Cup in soccer, the United States defeated Norway 2-1 in China to win the championship.

1993 - The NFL awarded the league's 30th franchise to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

1996 - Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls became the 10th player in NBA history to score 25,000 career points.

2015 - Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers announces he will retire at the end of the season.
