1399 - King Richard II became the first English monarch to abdicate his throne.

1789 - The U.S. War Department established a regular army with a strength of several hundred men.

1829 - London’s reorganized police force, which became known as Scotland Yard, went on duty.

1895 - French chemist Louis Pasteur died.

1918 - Allied forces scored a decisive breakthrough on the Hindenburg line during World War I.

1938 - British, French, German and Italian leaders concluded the Munich Agreement, which was aimed at appeasing Adolf Hitler by allowing Nazi annexation of Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland.

1943 - General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Italian Marshal Pietro Badoglio signed an armistice aboard the British ship HMS Nelson off Malta.

1962 - Canada joined the space age as it launched the Alouette 1 satellite from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

1978 - John Paul I died one month after becoming pope.

1982 - Seven people died after taking Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules that were laced with cyanide. This led to the use of safety seals on most consumer products. (To date, the case remains unsolved.)

1988 - The space shuttle Discovery was launched, America's first manned space flight since the Challenger disaster.

2000 - Israeli riot police stormed a major Jerusalem shrine and opened fire on stone-throwing Muslim worshippers, killing four Palestinians and wounding 175.

2001 - Former South Vietnamese president Nguyen Van Thieu died.

2001 - President George W. Bush condemned Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers for harboring Osama bin Laden and his followers as the United States pressed its military and diplomatic campaign against terror.

2005 - John Roberts was sworn in as the 17th chief justice of the United States Supreme Court.

2006 - U.S. Rep. Mark Foley (R-Florida) resigned after being confronted with sexually explicit computer messages he had sent to former House pages.

2008 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell a record 777.68 points after the House of Representatives defeated a $700 billion emergency rescue plan for the nation's financial system.

2011 - Germany kept alive hopes that the 17-nation euro currency could survive the debt crisis as lawmakers in Europe’s largest economy voted overwhelmingly in favor of expanding the powers of the eurozone’s bailout fund.

2016 - A New Jersey Transit commuter train slammed into the Hoboken station, killing one person and injuring more than 100 others.

2020 - The first debate between President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden deteriorated into bitter taunts and near chaos, as Trump repeatedly interrupted his opponent with angry and personal jabs and the two men talked over each other. Trump refused to condemn white supremacists who had supported him, telling one such group known as Proud Boys to “stand back, stand by.”

1913 - Pitcher Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators won his 36th game of the season.

1920 - Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees established a new single-season home run record of 54.

1946 - The Rams play their first football game in Los Angeles after having relocated from Cleveland.

1951 - The first network football game was televised by CBS-TV in color. The game was between the University of California and the University of Pennsylvania.

1954 - New York Giants centerfielder Willie Mays made an iconic over-the-shoulder running catch with his back to home plate on a 450-foot blast by Cleveland Indians batter Vic Wertz in Game 1 of the World Series.

1957 - The New York Giants played their final game at the Polo Grounds in a 9-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The team would relocate to San Francisco the following season.

1963 - Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals plays in the final game of his career.

1985 - The Dallas Cowboys tie an NFL record by sacking Houston Oilers quarterback Warren Moon 12 times.

1986 - Mary Lou Retton announced that she was quitting gymnastics.

1987 - Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees sets an MLB record with his sixth grand slam of the year.

1988 - The U.S. men's basketball team defeats Australia 78-49 to win the bronze medal at the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea; it is the final time the U.S. team would be represented in an Olympics without NBA players.

1992 - Magic Johnson announced that he was returning to professional basketball. The comeback ended the following November.

1996 - The Houston Astros retire Nolan Ryan's #34.

2002 - Seattle Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander sets an NFL record for most touchdowns in a half with five in the first half of a 48-23 win against the Minnesota Vikings.

2005 - The Chicago White Sox become just the 10th team in MLB history to be in first place in their division on every day of the season.

2018 - The New York Yankees establish a new MLB record with 265 home runs on the season.
